What should I expect?
Im looking for a wider soundstage, more detail and extension, and more bass. my setup is in my sig (emu 0404 - meier heafive).

That said, do you think this is a worthy upgrade? It seems like for the current price of the hd600's ($250) and its reputation makes it a great choice compared to others in that price range (old dt880, sr225).

I've been burning in 2 pairs 595s, 1 pair for 2 weeks, waiting for improvement.

Poorly recorded rock albums sound dull with the HD 600, but well recorded rock really shines with them. Depends on what you listen to more.

You could always keep the HD 595s as well. That's what I thought I was going to do but I haven't listened to them in a long while.

@ Senn20

I just received my 595's today and was wondering it's kinda lacking bass. My Plantronics audio .90 feel bassier than my new 595! Maybe they haven't been 'broken in' yet?

*edit* Nevermind what I said, I just brought these headphones and hooked it up to my living room receiver and it sounds totally different. The bass is very solid and abundant. I'm guessing there's something wrong with creative's I/O panel that I've been using because these headphones sound totally different when I plug them in directly to my soundcard.

It looks like you are thinking it works like HD600 is 5 better than the 595. Thats not how it works. The HD580 would be (more or less) the same as the HD600 (better than the 595). However none of these are great for rock. You should look into grados.

The senns are very good for rock .... you just need the right amp and a good source. I have owned every grado model except the 325 and the latest PS-1/ GS1000 and I dont know I like the grados more for rock than the senns. I always liked the sr-225 but the lack of soundstage and the brightish treble is just fatiguing. The senns .... especially the 595 .... can be equally good rock phones.

The 600s easily best the 595s when paired with the right amp. They match well with my GS-1. They are the one set of headphones I will never sell.

Im not expecting a whole new sound, just more refinement. The hd595's dont benefit a ton from an amp (they do benefit), and I was thinking the hd600 would be a great choice, would put my h5 to good use, they seem to be a standard, and go for pretty cheap.

Most of my metal/hard rock stuff sounds fine on my hd595 and on my ksc75, its mainly jazz, electronica, and lighter rock where the sonics become very important.

I can't say anything about the HD600's, but I did have a chance to compare the HD595 and HD650 at a local shop. Prior to this, my only good pair of headphones was an hd497.

I was prety well set on the HD595's just from reading here, and because they were half the price. Despite this, I own a pair of HD650's now. The difference was so big, there was no question they were worth spending double the amount of money for. The 595's weren't bad, they just weren't all that different from my 497's. The 650's had a much fuller sound, wider soundstage, definitly more bass, and most importantly, I enjoyed them much more. When I was listening to them, I didn't want to take them off, and when I was listening to the 595's, I wanted to go back to the 650's.

The best advice I can give you is go with what you like, and trust your ears. I spent hours reading about different headphones and got nowhere, but 10 minutes in a store listening to them, and my mind was made up.

I recently went through something similar. Found a store that had the 650 and went there prepared to buy it with my 595s in tow for comparison. I ended up leaving with just my lowly 595s. I'd like to hear the 600s some day but I won't be buying the 650s any time soon. Ultimately your ears and no one else's will determine which you would enjoy more.
