I'm looking for some free video editing and/or video capture software that's actually powerful and usable.

Think GIMP, but for video.

Anyone know of a source for such a beast?

You're welcome. There's a lot of nice video stuff for linux, now (and some of that is also available for Windows). My best friend (he's a professional system administator and software/web developer and has privately been Linux user for ages) is just setting up a new Ubuntu machine and is trying a lot of new stuff in the process. What I've seen so far is impressive, especially with software interoperability being a lot better than on Windows. I'm already thinking about switching my own media center pc to Ubuntu Linux as well.
