I haven't seen anyone post this, so please bear with me if it has already been discussed.
After reading about modifications to the stock Grado RS-1 bowl pads in this forum, I pulled them off the headphones to try cutting them down with a knife. However, before cutting the pads I turned them around and put them back on the cans. The back side of the bowl pads is flat and looks essentially like the old donut pads that originally came with my SR-60s years ago.
This placed the drivers closer to my ears and resulted in much better bass, exactly the change I was hoping for. Give it a try, doesn't cost anything and you can always go back to the bowl style if you don't like the results.
