Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

What I remember from when I tried the Grados is that I liked neither the GS1000i or PS1000 sound much, nor the GS1000 I owned at that time.
I did hear the RS1 at the same time and preferred that one. I will be trying them again this summer.
Comfortwise I am not a big fan of the foam pads.
The PS1000 felt heavy to me as in sliding downwards on your head.

find the ps1000 comfortable but with the heavy cups and loose fit i wouldn't be making any sudden moves

I find the TH900 very light and comfortable. Great sound for a closed headphone. They sound great out of the micro Zotl.

Slightly off topic....I've been looking at the Micro Zotl. Does it have enough output to get sufficiently loud with the Fostex and your other headphones? I have a Lyr 2 right now but would like something a little more euphonic than the Lyr 2, and I no longer own headphones that need that much power. Your feedback is appreciated.

If you get a chance to tryout the Sony Z7 do so, I feel they made my TH900s quite uncomfortable not like LCD uncomfy but not far off.

Really? I owned the Z7 and found it just slightly tight, not quite enough to call it uncomfortable, but it could be felt. The TH 900 is very, very comfortable with absolutely zero pressure ever.

Had the pleasure of trying the setup at Audioarts in New York City and I am now a believer in the headphone output of the Nagra HD DAC.
I bought with me the TH900, Macbook Pro, Chord Hugo and AQ Diamond USB2 cord.

Whatever minute shrillness in the upper end the TH900 has with female vocals was gone with the Nagra HD DAC headphone output.  The noise floor disappeared versus with the Chord Hugo.  The Hugo was no slough by any means when partnered with the TH900.
There were details revealed with the Nagra the Hugo could not articulate.  Clarity of tones and even minute gestures of the performer like the parting of lips and gasp for air.  The singer was clearly in the room.  There was no hint of the digital realm.  The Nagra sounded very much like my 300B amps at home, just with more clarity, detail and nuance.
I tried replicating the experience at home with all my DACs and amps.  I just could not.

If you have the opportunity to try the Nagra HD DAC with your TH900 or another TOL can, do.
Be warned of the lingering effects.
Envy that may set you back $30K.

I was interested in that setup until the last line... Setting me back $30k not happening... I need powerball!!

Not to mention, I'll bet a $5000 rig could sound 99.8% as good. Some blind listening tests are great equalizers.

Hi guys, I've been trying to find a portable DAC/amp for this headphone so that I can take it with me whenever I move my laptop. I've been looking at the Chord Hugo (too expensive) and ifi micro iDSD (seems to have channel imbalance problems at low volume). Any other suggestions?

Fostex HP-V1

Edit: Sorry, you said DAC/Amp, the V1 only serves as a headphone amplifier. Then I'd suggest the HP-P1.
