I currently own a pair of denon d5000's is the fostex an upgrade? I really value bass and can't stand sybillant highs.

I find the TX-X00 has the same treble issues that the D5000 has in that it can become very bright with certain songs. If it were me this "upgrade" will be lateral at best and sticking with the Denon will save you some money.
 
I actually find the D2000 and D5000 less bright at times than the TH-X00 because they have less energy from 1.5kHz on up.

The Fostex TH-900 is a definite upgrade from the Denon D5000, but will dent your wallet.

Edit: If you want to buy used, this guy is selling a TH-900 for cheap, and has lots of positive feedback:

He might even take the Denon D5000 as partial trade with cash. Doesn't hurt to ask him.

Everyone I've seen has said the TH-X00 has very smooth treble compared to the TH-900... which is much brighter.
