Fostex TH-7B: Best portable/closed headphone that costs less than $100?

Now I'm actually interested in hearing this because if I' like it enough I'd consider selling my beloved HD650 and getting these instead; although I don't want to just buy these without hearing some more comparisons so if anyone has any impressions or any comparisons (especially with my HD650) then please post.

I hope some reviewers get a few samples.  I might as well buy them if they rock as the reviewer at headfonia hears.

It is a semi-open and not a closed headphone. And from what I gathered it seriously lacks bass. It would be nice to find a real good $100 headphone but so far I haven't found it anywhere (e.g. tried the Superlux HD668B and I think they are sort of ok for the money but far from being a giant killer)

...how could not being fully closed and lacking strong bass mean it's not good, if I may ask?

Regarding to the semi-open design I was just pointing to the fact that it was mistaken in the review.
For me the roll-off is a glaring fault for others that might be good, I don't want overpowering bass but I don't want to loose most of it either if the music has it.
All is dependent on what you are getting used to and I am used to a full-range type of sound.

"seriously lacks bass" is very different from "lacking strong bass". He was just pointing out the incorrect information I think, and isolation is usually important in case of a portable headphone. I wouldn't rely on any headfonia article, that's for sure. His statements are all over the place.

Purple? Really? That alone would make me stay away from these, although I will admit, the impressions look promising.

No I didn't hear it so as I wrote I could be wrong, I just looked it from a different perspective that the flaws (or just a single flaw) can be more important than the good points.
 
I did buy the HD668B based on the review I read there and I was disappointed as it didn't sound the way it was described.

Ok thanks, just checking because you seemed very sure about how these sound. I think we all need to wait for some actual real impressions. I do agree that one persons review no matter how respected is usually enough as their personal preferences will usually come into play in the review. So if they like lighter bass they may suggest the bass of a headphone to be great while others might not agree. It pays to know your reviewer if possible.

I'd love to get a pair of these, I kind of want a closed portable set of cans.  But alas, I'm currently in a situation where I can't really order anything from outside of China right now (at least not without paying massive import fees).
