Both would complement the Stellia just in terms of having both an open and closed headphone. Out of the two open options the Lcd4 is the better headphone but hard to drive. Empyrean is easy to drive, very comfortable, best system to change EarPads but totally dull in comparison to Lcd4. Empyrean doesn’t really scale well...it stays dull. My opinion and everybody else’s might most certainly be different.
I'm on the other boat the Empyrean is not dull. Plus I use them on a big tube amp. The Empyrean is rich and scales with power behind it. I've owned both and prefer the Empyrean. My favorite Audeze are the X and 2. The 4 I'd say has clearer sound more neutral to the warmer Meze. Meze is the fun one but not a detail king like the 4 but well rounded. You could buy both and not like either. If the Stellia is really good at detail but not fun you may want to have for fun. My sound quality monster is Solitaire P.
It’s beautiful and sort of glamorous but agree that in its price bracket it represents the least value/audiophile performance for the money. Bought mine from a friend who imported them directly to New Zealand and got rid of them pretty quickly. He thought they are not even worth half its asking price. Gladly took them off his hands only to realise that he wasn’t wrong.
In a strange way it’s all there but they never really took off whatever configuration/cable or whatever. Really wanted to love them but eventually had to accept that other headphones had a more positive emotional impact.
By dull I guess you guys mean it's not highly articulate sounding? Can yall expand on this. It seems like the negative criticism of Empy is that it's on the warm side (sounds a bit shaved off up top?) and perhaps not that clear sounding?
Does Empy sound like it has lower-mids thickness? Does it sound open or more on the closed side? I'm guess it's more on the closed side if there is thickness in the sound from reverb. Most planars out there are really closed sounding even if they say 'open.' I find Hifimans being the only true open planar maker.

With dull I mean emotionally not engaging...for various reasons probably. It is on the warm side for sure but with the Empyreans my music never picked me up and took me places...you know what I mean.

LCD 4 has a beautiful midrange. It makes you listen to the mids again and again. Verite has a smooth treble, you wanna hear the treble flow. Utopia is like a neutral reference. It does most things very well. Although the soundstage is a bit small, the sound within the small stage is one of the most correct sound if that makes sense. Also, LCD 4 and Utopia are extremely resolving.
Empyrean has nothing. It makes sound but that's about it. I would rather watch paint dry than listen to it. There's really not much to talk about them.
Dull? Non-engaging? It is interesting that opinions of different person can be deviated by that much. I own Empyrean, Stellia, Ether Flow Open and Obravo HAMT-3 MKII and to me, Empyrean is the most engaging, musical, enjoyable and technical advanced Headphone.
I have briefly owned Utopia but Empyrean is much more natural and engaging to me.

Empyrean: Sounds like a closed-back.
Utopia: I prefer the Clear. Prone to driver (wire) failures.
LCD-4: Painfully heavy, prone to driver failures, sounds a little like a closed-back.
You should check out Stax, ZMF, and the HD800S instead.
May be. Have you owned Empyrean or how long have you auditioned it? I guess the thread is comparing Utopia and Empy and I have once owned them both. What TOTL CAN that you think putting Empy at such inferior comment?
