Focal Lensys

And do you still think it’s worth paying more for that kind of difference?
In my opinion, it’ll boil down to preference or use case. If I had to keep one of these two, it would most likely be the Azurys due to being more full bodied/easily engaging/fun. Obviously for professional use I think it’s worth paying more for the Lensys.

I think the Haydenys are clearly worth the premium due to being open back and pleasantly tuned as well.

I’ve only had these headphones for a short time so my listening impressions may change my views, but that’s where they stand now.

So, I’ve had more time with the Lensys. My observations about the coiled cable having less of a sub-bass elevation compared with the straight cable remained true but the gap narrowed over time. Resolution is quite good, good enough I didn’t feel much was missing going from my Utopia 2022. Ultimately, I returned the Lensys as the sub-bass elevation was a bit too much for my tastes, especially compared with the Utopia 2022.

I’ve only had a short time with the Lensys but the subbase is something that I felt makes the more linear tuning enjoyable offhand by providing a little underlying warmth. Although, it may not seem/sound entirely natural. I’m simply using these for casual listening. I’ll need more listening time, but I think it actually may be a reason why I would keep the Lensys as I’m still within my return period.

I shouldn't be buying more headphones but here we are. Someone local was selling their pair on eBay and with a reasonable discount Ive bit the bullet.

I use Focal Shape 50 for monitoring in my studio with the Clear OG for late night mixing. Hearing the comments that these sound similar to the Shape have me very interested.

I'm needing to do some vocal work soon and my closed backs are currently Elegia & ATM50 so I figure I can use these for tracking and for mixing when can't use my monitors.

Very interested to see how these compare to my Clear and Elegia!

I mentioned this in the Hadenys/Azurys thread, but I’m really not a fan of the sound of the Azurys. The tonality is off to a distracting degree. Does anyone know if tone/timbre is the same on the Lensys and Azurys?

I only ask because I REALLY like the form factor. It fits me great, it’s light, and I actually love the cable only attaching to one side, makes it more convenient with a DAP in my pocket.

I received the Lensys today and have spent some time at work listening on the Focal Arche.

Early first impressions:
  • Build & Fit: These are stunning in person and I really do like this form factor. I have the Elegia & Clear OG and the lighter weight, headband, feel and materials are all ticking the boxes for me. Earcup size feels spot on for me whilst being a bit smaller and are also very comfortable. I spent probably 3-4hrs and had no issues with the headband.
  • Sound: I'll be honest, these took me by a bit of surprise! I was smiling instantly listening to my favorite tracks. These are really dynamic, fast & punchy and definitely sound very open. There is more 'air' here than with the Clear OG, at least that's what I am hearing without a direct comparison right now. They retrieve a lot of detail and present instrument soundstage very accurately (which you would hope as a studio headphone). I listened to a few of my current mixes I am working on and they sounded very similar to what I am hearing on my Focal Shape 50 monitors. When I get home I will do some actual testing on this.
I would say the comments suggesting that you if like a warmer presentation then these aren't for you is accurate. Personally I am not finding anything harsh, just very clear and detailed. The low end is also quite fun! I definitely had no issues just enjoying music today.

Keen to listen more tonight!

What are your impressions now?

What are your impressions now?
I've spent the last day or so extensively listening to these and here are some further impressions!

Commuting: I've just started back on taking the train to work so I dug out my old Oppo HA-2 and listened to the Lensys for my 40min commute. I was a bit worried about this pairing as the Oppo has a bit of a high-end sheen and with the bright & detailed top-end on these I thought it might cause issues. To some extent it did as on some tracks it was a bit much but overall nothing that become too disruptive to my enjoyment. Isolation was great I thought as I could still hear my surroundings quietly. I had these cranked and not one person battered an eye at me so potentially isolation with my fit was quite good!

Work: I spent the day really pushing these via the Focal Arche and listened to more bass & electronic music. These are a quite fun listen with plenty of low end to satisfy. I did some comparisons with my Elegia w/Dekoni Sheepskin and whilst I initially felt the Lensys felt thinner here, I ended up preferring it as the Elegia sounded more muddy and less precise. I also tested out the different Arche presets for driving them and these actually made quite a difference to the experience. The 'voltage' mode has the lowest impedance I believe and I ended up preferring this. If I wanted to roll-off some high-end though I found the Elegia preset was a bit softer.

Studio: Last night I tracked some vocals and isolation was perfect. The condenser microphone didn't pickup anything from the headphones at all and the recording was super clean. I also did some comparisons listening to my Shape 50 monitors and then on the Lensys I would agree with the other comments that tonally these are very similar so this is a win for me for mixing and tracking with them.

Burn in: I do believe these need time to run in as initially I could here some of the spicy top-end poking out in a non-pleasant way however after a few days use this has now non-existent.

These are a very detailed open sounding closed-back that cover the FR very well. If you are after a more laid-back presentation or warmer tone, these aren't for you however if you enjoy clarity, precision and aren't sensitive to treble then these are a joy in my opinion. I did one EQ during my listen of reducing 5k by 0.7 and this was an easier listen however took away some of energy and excitement.

Comparisons: I've not had much time as yet however I did some back on forth between the Clear OG and these are very different beasts. I think I would prefer to mix on the Lensys to the Clear as these do sound much closer to my monitors. The Clear do sound bigger with a larger soundstage and present with less treble however the low-end was nowhere near as satisfying as the Lensys.

I am finding that the thinner headband gets a little irritating after a while so might actually look at the Capra band and hope this fits. I also need to look at some better cable options as for portable use the included cable is too thick and rigid for me. I'm happy enough with the coiled cable in the studio though.

I will spend more time this week but at the moment I am really happy as I am finding them great for general enjoyment whilst also doing what I need them to do in the studio.

Now I feel like I need to hear the Hadenys though!

My opinion is close to yours. I'm glad you liked lensys. I'm listening to them now and enjoying them. I really like that their sound is close to shape )

Just got the Lensys Pro in today. It took me a min to adjust to the bass presentation. I almost immediately boxed them back up. Glad I gave them a fair shake because WOW! These bad boys are impressive. Quite pleased at the moment.

Did you think the bass was not enough or too much?

It was definitely too much when I first heard them. I guess brain burn-in allowed me to appreciate the quality of the bass. It’s really nice on well mixed tracks in most genres but can be overpowering when the song has boosted/poorly mixed bass.

I’m not a bass head but I’d imagine the Lensys Pro should be on the shortlist for those who are. Very prominent and well controlled. When A/B’ing, it makes the D8000 Pro feel like the HD650 in the bottom end. Which is crazy to me.

Yeah, I’m right there with you. I’ve owned several “pro” headphones and the Lensys Pro is definitely the most colored I’ve ever heard. I’m not sure how useful they can be as a tool but they’re great for music enjoyment.
