I hadn't listened to this in a few years and forgot how much ass it kicks. I had to turn the subwoofer all the way down and my neighbor still came over to complain.

The bass on this record....ohmygod

Huge Trivium fan here as well. Shogun is fantastic, In Waves is also a solid album, but Ascendancy just reigns supreme imo. Have a problem with a few tracks on In Waves that I just cant get over for it to be a perfect album.  Glad to see them in this thread nonetheless.

I love Ascendancy, but I feel that they have grown much more since In Waves. They've burrowed a hole in the world of technicality and nailed it. With In Waves (and perhaps their upcoming album), I think they are trying to lean in the direction of musicality more. It's not saying that I feel Ascendancy wasn't good or that they lost their technical abilities, because they haven't and I don't feel that way either. I feel they are just trying to explore new worlds of music, which I find to be bold but a particularly fine motive. I can see why a lot of fans did find In Waves to be a bit sub-par from their previous work, but I enjoy seeing them grow as musicians. Though I must say, I can never forget the bad*** song that introduced me to the group and going crazy in mosh pits when they performed the song live. Sure do hope they come back to my area soon. :)

I guess this form of music could use some extensive listening to determine what is they are lyrically saying. I used to be the same way, but I've listened to too much of this genre already to pick up most of the words.

For those of you into modern jazz, check out the selftitled album by Portico Quartet. It's their most recent album and I might say quite a stunning one. Great album! Four guys, each playing a different instrument and it all comes together as one great orgasm of sound :)

Here a sample:

Lots of great stuff listed in this thread with which I agree.
Here's my personal list.
Not sure if they're flawless but...
When listening to these selections I cant listen to a little,
Gotta go all the way through.

Tom Waits - Blood Money
Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Georg Frederich Haas- In Vain
Michael Hedges- Breakfast in the Field
Julian Bream - 20th Century Guitar
John Zorn - Naked City
Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Iannis Xenakis - La Legende d'Eer
Derek Bailey - improvisation
Dave Holland - Conference of the birds

An odd list maybe but every one of these albums
extended my perception of music and opened me to unfamiliar genres.
