Downloaded the flac encoder, but I can't figure out how to make songs from my CD's into WAV files. It is apparently the only format usable for flac encoding. Please help!

Don't waste your time encoding manually.
There are programs out there to manage the process of getting data off a CD, encoding it (with FLAC or something else), and tag it (that is writing the names of the artists, titles of the tracks, and so on on the files).
The one I used is called EAC. There are small guides on hydrogenaudio.org which will tell you how to configure it (in more detail than you need probably).
