Well not technically first because I plan to make some RCA ICs as my first project..

The idea is something like a Pimeta, Gamma 1 (or Bantam, or other) USB DAC, and a small psu housed in something small, geared for SR80 (my father in law's headphones). He uses his headphones directly out of his laptop (ugh..) so I figure this would be a nice thing to give him.

Does this sound like a reasonable first (real) project? Any advice on which USB DAC or PSU to use? I've done some light searching (there is so much to read), but I'm still a bit lost as to the sheer amount of designs out there in DIY.

Thanks,

Chris

Yes I'm aware of the SMD. I'll be fine. I'm used to working with very small chisels and files when working on violins, so my fine motor control is good. I'll also be using a Hakko 936-11 (the smaller iron) so I'll have good tools.

My first project was an Alien DAC with 0.5mm pin spacing. SMD isn't that scary...
