My budget is between $50 and $100. What are your suggestions for good headphones to be used for mostly music, but also for DVD's occasionally. So far I am looking at the HD497, the SR60's, and also the Alessandro MS-1. Radioshack has HD497 for $70 near me, so I am going to go over there and try them out. I listen to rock, classic rock, and lots of various stuff. I don't need tons of bass, as that's what my speakers are for.

Thanks, Jonathan.

Alessandro MS-1 would be my top choice. HD497 isn't a really good phone especially for its price. Sony MDR-V6 or Senn HD280 are much better than HD497 in my opinion.

among the choices you are thinking about, I think MS-1 suits you the best.

I'd easily go with the MS1. Think it's the best sub $100 phone out there.
Next grouping (for price/performance) would be: SR80, SR60 KSC35, PortaPro/PortaPro2
Then: CD780, HD497.
Then most of the closed phones: V6, HD280, D66, etc.

Haven't heard the A500, but if they're like the A900, should be considered also. If you go up to $120, the HD555 should be looked at too.

But another vote for the MS1.

Just to mention, I saw a pair of AKG 501s on ebay for $125. I think those should be looked at. You might be able to find a pair of sennheiser HD580s for a little over $100 to. I think both the sound and comfort of the above 2 cans is worth the extra ~$30 or so over the alessandro ms-1.

Comfort is even more important to me than sound quality, after all no matter how good headphones sound, if you don't enjoy wearing them what's the point? Therefore I would like to able to try on headphones before I buy them.

well, just because they are a newer model doesn't make the senn 555's better than the 590s.

I haven't listened to the 555s, but the 590s are superb. They are meant for classical music and IMO they are a little more analytical than the 580s. I think that if you are interested in the 590s, you should be on the look out in the for sale forum... I saw a new in box set going for $135 tonight. That is a great deal for such a fantastic set of cans.

Unamped, the 555s are going to perform better than the 590s, but something as inexpensive as a cmoy could give them the push they need for a good performance. Look for a local audio shop that might have both of these and let you try them. I know my local "Good Guys" has the 590s since that is where I first heard them.

So true. I decided not to get some highly recommended phones becuase they just werent't confortable enough. I decided to get the a500's . . . I don't think a headphone could be more comfortable. Plus, they sound great.

CD3000s are more comfortable, but at $700RRP they better well be! I prefer my A900s too.
