Fire Fox tips

First you'll want to view hidden files & folders. Tools -> Folder Options -> View (tab) -> Show Hidden files and folders.

Open up My Documents and then go up 1 or 2 levels. Otherwise open up My Computer, C: drive, Documents and Settings, your username, Application Data directory.

You should see a Mozilla folder. Inside is a Fire Fox folder. In side that is your default profile folder.

Close all instances of Firefox, then click Start>Run and type:
firefox.exe -p
to start the profile Manager.

What do I do if my profile's corrupted?
Sometimes, rogue extensions can corrupt Mozilla's profile. Assuming it works OK, you can copy over the "bookmarks.html" file from the old profile into the new one to get your bookmarks. Same goes for:

* cookies.txt
* cookperm.txt
* userContent.css
* userChrome.css

If you don't want to go though all that though, there are a few things you can do that might save the old profile. For example, deleting xul.mfl from the old profile can help [see link].

You can also copy "pref.js", but it contains absolute paths, so you'll need to manually update it to the new profile location.

See the link for the full instructions.

The Profile Manager/Profile In Use Bug
If you are getting the "default profile is in use" error, delete the parent.lock file (also known as lock or .parentlock) in your profile folder. If it does not let you delete the file, then either Mozilla is still running or another program is using it. Start "Task Manager" and kill the process "firefox.exe" to free up the lock file.

Firefox only: If you can run Firefox in safe mode, then the source of your problem is your extensions.

profiles.ini :
default=1 indicates the profile Firefox will use when "Don't ask at Startup" is enabled in the Profile Manager (StartWithLastProfile=1 in profiles.ini)

network.dns.ipv4OnlyDomains

Ever wonder why is set to doubleclick.net?

http://www.rokop-security.de/board/l...php?t5583.html :

The network.dns.ipv4OnlyDomains setting is used to list domains that should use only IPv4.

The setting is added because ads served by doubleclick.net can cause webpages to hang when the browser is set to use IPv6. Apparently, AAAA DNS requests get 'black holed' whenever doubleclick in involved.

Now, if you have IPv6 disabled, and you http://www.doubleclick.com/us/corpor...asp_object_1=&
and then add doubleclick.net to your hosts file ... :wink:

Actually, now that I think about it, if you have IPv6 set and you have FireFox Ipv6 to use doubleclick.net as your dns IPv4 server and you have doubleclick.net in your hosts file you should see a major slow down in Firefox.

So if it is really slow, you now know what to look for.

I have problems with viewing videos on either mtv.com or yahoo launch. the website always prompts that I dont have the neccessary media player installed, which is most likely to be referred to media player since I can play videos by real player on mtv.com. right now, when I need to see the videos, I just use IEview to switch to IE but thats only a temprary solution. Can someone help? Thanks.

Any way to make Ctrl+N open a copy of the current page instead of the homepage? The nerds all tell me to get an extension, but my swift rebuttal of "Why would I track down an extension to do something IE does normally?" make sthem go "ARRRGGGGGHHHH I am vanquished by logic!" and their head explodes.

But seriously, the nerds at my school won't get off my case, I need to find an extension to fix ctrl+n!

I believe the entry you're referring to is 'network.http.request.max-start-delay'. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of it. Unless you have really fast broadband, I guess. My 1.5/256 isn't instant; usually takes 2-5 seconds to load most pages. And with that enabled, the screen goes wonky for a little bit before loading content.
