I used to think K1000 'needs' tubes somewhere in the chain. At one point, I had a great modded tube CDP-->300B PP tube amp-->DIY cables-->modded K1000. Certainly, this was a fantastic setup with NONE of the "metallic treble" and "shy bass" people keep mentioning.
I'm currently using Empirical Audo modded Transit (or Lynx 2B card)--> Sonic Impact with a huge PS-->modded K1000. No tubes in sight, yet still ZERO metallic treble and BASS that reaches deep and very Hard. Sound is just as fabulous and enjoyable, in a different way, from the tube setup.
K1000 owners need to somehow figure out a way to get the K1000 drivers closer to their ears beyond what the stock headband allows, which will allow the real potential of K1000 to unleash. If you hear bright/thin treble with weak bass, all it means is that you haven't been able to optimize the K1000 setup yet IMO.

Not to knock those cans, but IMO the K-1000s are far superior [in my system] in terms of tonality and detail. The veil has been lifted. I am so completely satisfied, in fact, that I bought a second pair as a spare--I wouldn't want to go even one day without them. Upgrade? Not in this lifetime. |
