Perhaps sobrietywarrior might have meant, JH|16 to ALO Mk3 to CLAS-db to iDevice?

I too am interested in the opinions of the many, having just received my JH3a

Can other headphones work with the JH3A dac/amp? what termination would it need?

Probably not, the amp side uses a weird 8-pin mini XLR, and on the IEM side there's separate drive to the bass 4 and the mid/high 4. The four pin configuration on the IEM side would have to be replicated to retain full functionality - as far as combining the two circuits with a custom headphone cable I don't know if that would be safe for either amp or headphone. Probably not?

The set up cost of the JH 16 pro with the ALO MK3 amp is more $$$ however you also dont have to use the MK3.  How well do the JH3A's perform with out the use of AMP, for example the adapter looks a little rigged.

Hi, I didnt compare with Alo MK3, but I compared JH-3a with some really good home rigs, for example Burson 160 DS, Benchmark dac1, Vincent s5 with SPL Auditor and some less known local manufacturers and I must say, JH-3A for me beats them all. It just takes jh-16 to its maximum.

PS: I have older non-freqphase version.
