I've only heard/auditioned the HD595 and I was very impressed with them. Clean & clear slightly warm sound, and they were ultra comfortable.

You might as well get the HD595. It's arguably the most neutral of the bunch, and will give you a good starting point. From there, you can branch off to where ever your journey takes you.

No. Not only will you not be able to drive them well, but the 5000's are especially critical of your source and throw is back in your face with no respect. The sound might even be very harsh sounding. You will hear everything wrong with the ipod's sound. I think it especially important to appropriately amp the 5000's.

X2. The 595 is also a good can for pop and rock.

I own all four headphones you mentioned and the iCans too. If you don't need isolation and listen to rock on a portable source I wouldn't spend $250. I'd buy either the Alessandro MS-1's or a used Grado SR225. You could get by for either $100 (MS-1) or about $150 (used SR225) and spend the extra on your choice of ipods.
