I've listened to Evanescence at a friends request and there are a lot of things I like about them. Their music has an orchestrated and grandiouse feel to it. The singer is female and has a strong and stable voice not always singing with vibrato, but instead dead-on pitches. My problem is that I have a personal failing in that I have toruble listening to more mainstreame music. Its my way to rebel.

Are there other bands that sound like this as I have described it above? If anyone knows, its the head-fi community. Thanks for the help!

Well if you like Evanescence, listen to Evanescence and everyone else be damned!

But if you want something like Evanescence but a bit less homogenized pop and a bit more diverse... (Not that I'm too hateful of Evanescence, I think they just suffer a bit from the one concept repeated for an entire album syndrome... Heck I respect anyone who self-consciously alienates Christian rockers)

Lets see here:

I can't come up with anything I would call a direct replacement... Evanescence's torch song meets nu-metal is at least a bit unique. Do you listen to Portishead? They certainly capture the faded grandeur effect that I think Evanescence is going for. Plus Portishead is one of those groups that I think everyone should at least be aware of. For orchestrated work check out PNYC. Plus Beth Gibbons has a voice that, while a bit different, I think you will appreciate.

If you like the piano driven aspect of Evanescence you might consider taking a step back to the early 90s and listen to Fiona Apple's first album, Tidal. It even has an understated gothy classicism.

For strong, clear female voices have you ever listened to Perfume Tree? It's been a while since I've spun up their work... But IIRC they have a similar vocal performance. Again, IIRC Feeler was their best album.

While different sonically, I think it could easily be argued that Evanescence is the spiritual descendant of Garbage. (Or at least that it fits into a similar place in pop culture). Thus they might resonate with you.

All of the above are only somewhat similar either in performance or ambience, but I think they might get you headed in the right direction. There probably are more direct replacements in the goth/metal/alterna-metal world but I'm not really well enough versed to comment.

Edit: Also, you might want to dig a little into Stereolab's discography... A bit different, much more geared towards electronica but I could see a connection.

You should try Within Temptation, The Gathering, Lacuna Coil and Nightwish.

Basically, almost anything that can be found on Sonic Cathedral.

Some of the better known groups - After Forever, Within Temptation, Epica, The Gathering, Leaves' Eyes, Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil, Tristania, Sirenia, Nightwish, etc. Any and all put Evanescence to shame and are pretty much exactly what you're looking for.

After Forever's Decipher and Within Temptation's Mother Earth are as good as any for a starting point.

Oh I so cannot stand Amy Lee's voice. I can hardly listen to three songs before getting a headache.
The recommended bands however should really make you happy. You can also try Stream of Passion for a really beautiful approach by Arjen Lucassen. You can download a video from their website.

Aghora's first album.

also, the female singer in Nightwish has left the band, just in case anyone doesn't know.

The only one I can think of is Nightwish. kttp and asmox seem to have the best suggestions though (from previous memories of genre discussions like this). But it's hard for me to recommend since the only song I've heard by Evanescence is Bring Me To Life :P

I'm amazed that people even gave responses after reading a sentance like this. Your viewpoint is, how shall we put it, asinine. If you really want to rebel, make your own choices, never NEVER let other peoples perception of something dictate what you like or who you are.

You will never be able to fully appreciate music, or life for that matter, if you are focused on being something you are not. You want to really rebel in contemporary society? Use your brain. Trust in yourself. Don't let labels EVER get in the way of what you like or dislike.

You could SERIOUSLY use some Tool. Listen to the lyrics carefully.
