Just a note to help those who run into this problem.  I had random skips trying to play 192k/24bit tracks on both the X3 and X5 players.  This was found to be dependent (at least) on the format being used.  It consistently failed on NTFS formatted chips and always worked using FAT32 formats.  Most of my chips are 64Gb and have about 5000 tracks on them.  It didn't seem to follow any particular chip vendor, although I use mostly class 10 chips.  The firmware was 3.0 for the X3 and 2.0 for the X5.  I used Guiformat (Softonic) for the FAT32 formatting.

Otherwise I was very surprised to find that the X5 was noticeably better than the X3 in terms of sound quality and I think better than my Teac A-H01 DAC amp.  So now I run the line out into the Teac rather than coax out.  (I use the X3 in the car.)  Overall very pleased with the X5 - awesome device!
