Well there you go then - only @rocksarkar can decide if they want to wait until November for another DAP. However, the M11 Plus is still a good DAP in the meantime (especially for IEMs), and is just as fast as their existing M17, since it uses the same SoC.
i went with m11 plus ltd used one for good price... thanks for all the advices. .i wanted something portable and not premium price tag.. with used m11 plus price i can be less worried in the gym/travel of dropping it

I honestly never understood why people take their DAPs to the gym. Where all the noise and overall workout would interrupt the sound quality.

I use a Sony WS413 player for my workouts. It doesn't even support flac files, but It's waterproofed and super resistant. Besides, I don't mess around when I work out(1 hour on the thread mill and 1 hour weight lifting), I sweat A LOT.

Using iems or a mildly expensive player is not so convenient, at least for me.

Good sweat proof BT IEMs with ANC are probably the best idea for total freedom in the gym.

First of all, you can very well damage your hearing. Second, loudness is not exclusive to iems.

My point is, your senses are focusing on something else, not on the music, therefore it's -in my opinion- a waste of money spending on mildly expensive gear to go to the gym. It's understandable if you go on a flight, train or a long ride, but not in the gym.

To take it a bit further, even the music we usually hear (not listen) at the gym is different. I personally love blues, blues rock, jazz, soul, some hip hop, indie rock and some classical. My Sony WS413 is only loaded with house and trance....

I know, to each their own, right? But you know what I mean.

Now, back to business. I think I'll pull the trigger with this one. The major selling point for me is the desktop mode. With this, I can increase my chances of longevity even if I want to try high impedance or low sensitivity headphones.

I am considering a smaller sized DAP that can do 1W @ 32 ohms (plus a few other features) in addition to my M17 and looks like FiiO is again the strong candidate. One question for @FiiO : I don't see the XMOS chip for the USB in the specs. Is it the case? If yes, does it have any side effects / missing features vs the original M15 and M17? I don't use MQA.

Dear friend,

Without the XMOS chip, the latency in USB DAC mode is a little bit higher in M15S but the normal usage would not be affected actually.

Best regards

USB powered desktop mode is so convenient! Did I mention Roon Ready?

20230429_032944.jpg

Build quality, solid. Volume dial, surprisingly good. Smooth with right amount of tension. Thought it would be difficult to make incremental adjustments with its small dial, but not the case. It's just as easy as quickly ramping up the volume. Plus, if you're not a fan, you can switch to button mode. Included case is well made. The darker subdued tone goes well with the device's mature aesthetics. The rear vents make it possible to use with the cooling stand with the case on.

SW seems stable OOTB. SW bugs and glitches are usually my biggest headache and annoyance with Android DAPs (and why I keep promising myself never to use DAPs again). Haven't noticed any issues with FW updates or downloading/running apps (Tidal, UAPP, Roon remote etc.). No issues w/ BT when connected to my Px8. Besides that, typical SD 660 speed and operations. No unusual battery drain.

In desktop mode, device stays cool on high gain while inside its case, and cooling stand isn't needed. Only time it gets a bit toasty is when quick charging and playing simultaneously. In this scenario, cooling stand does its job well (quiet in 'low' fan mode). Desktop mode via USB charging is very convenient, and I much prefer this over the barrel connector type charging on M17/Q7.

As is usually the case, didn't notice much difference between LPFs. Harmonic distortion regulation mode seem to smooth things out a bit, but unsubstantiated. "All to DSD" mode may add a tiny bit of air, but TBH, unsure of its effects and probably not worth the additional battery drain and heat it imposes (at least that's what the pop-up message suggests, albeit didn't notice increased heat in this mode).

Now,

Not sure this is an A10 limitation but folders can only display 2 icons per row when expanded, which is a bit annoying. Also, you can only have 4 icons in the favorite's tray in the bottom.

Pairing can be a bit picky/tricky IME. I've tried with many HPs, and seems to generally do better with harder to drive HPs. 800s and Noire sounded really good (in high gain, no need to go UH). Low imp/high sen. cans were hit or miss. Dynamics is exceptional all around, and perhaps the most impressive part about this device IMO. But there's something unnatural sounding about its treble presentation. Not always, but in some cases, it can be quite aggressive with this sort of unnatural reverb effect that didn't sound pleasing. Synergy with U4S is good, but I prefer the flatter sound out of the Questyle's M15.

Overall, for my use case, it's brilliantly convenient. I have it setup at bedside in desktop mode, and not worrying about battery life is great. And in Roon mode, I don't have to fiddle with the device at all and just use my phone for control. And when I need to move around, it's size and weight is much more palatable than something like the M17/Q7.

To be honest, I bought it mainly because it's Roon ready. It may be a hodge podge of aging parts (e.g. OS, screen, DAC etc.) with some new features added to extend its life cycle and remain competitive, but still quite effective and useful IMO/IME.

The next iteration will be quite interesting.

Enjoy! I was looking around for a smaller but still powerful device with some specific features (outputs on top of the player, volume dial on the top or on the side and not as fragile as the SPx000, >=1W @32 ohms, larger side buttons loctated on the top half so that I don't accidentally touch them while holding, <1.5 ohms output impedance, possibility of using Wavelet and/or Poweramp EQ, smaller and easier to hold and carry than my M17) and I keep coming back to FiiO. FiiO has really clever no-BS designs. I don't know any other device that can run with USB power. Others all stuff their designs with unneeded amount of DACs, memory etc., but these have no added value to the user experience in audio context, other than inflating the price. I seriously considered even the Shanling M9+, but I can't see any added value from that 3X price. It claims to have less output impedance which might be useful for extremely low impedance multi driver IEMs with impedance wildly fluctuating around 4 ohms, but is really it. The differences in the measurements are in the inaudible region.

I would like to repeat what I have written in another thread: "Experienced engineers will produce similar quality of a device with similar quality components." In that sense, an 8 channel ES9038PRO (or even less) design and a 4xAK4499EX design will result in similar quality devices in the hands of experienced engineers that know how to implement them properly, and FiiO is probably one of the top 3 most experienced ones in the market.

The only thing I see missing is a generic PEQ but at least for the Android mode it can be compansated with Wavelet.

Yeah I believe M15s is a good comprise between power and size. I don't need gobs of power in a portable setup as long as it can sufficiently power IEMs and easier to drive HPs. High imp./low sen. HPs are becoming more rare these days anyways. And I careless about the dual/quad DAC fad. I'd rather have a single DAC chip w/ extra battery life in a portable setup. I do wish more recent OS and better Soc for convenience reasons though.

For me, USB powered desktop mode (especially considering the form factor) and Roon Ready are two best features of this DAP. This DAP just makes sense from a portable/convenience POV.
