FiiO K1--smaller and better for less

Not sure why you guys even bother trying to connect a USB DAC/AMP to a smartphone when a great many of them have excellent audio performance to start with (the iPhone is one of them, also the LG G3 mentioned above) and the K1 doesn't really have a much more powerful amp than them. I use this site http://www.gsmarena.com/ when I need a new phone (subjective measurements for tons of phones) and the 300€ phone I bought a few weeks ago is absolutely perfect audio wise.

I am not impressed with the sound quality from my G4 headphone output to HD 380's. Gonna be picking up a K1 to try and get better audio out of this thing. I've heard the G3 actually has a better DAC for some reason.

Can someone elaborate on why it wouldn't be a good idea to connect this to powered computer speakers? I'm happy to get a different product for that, but would like to learn what could happen, etc.

Sadly does not work with my iPhone 5 or 5s. Still sounds great on my iPhone 6S though! Maybe it's time to upgrade :)

Hmmm, perhaps it is because the Plus model(s) (maybe someone with a 6 Plus can confirm whether it works on that?) can handle putting out more power for USB devices given the larger battery?

Luckily, I have a 6s Plus myself, so this means I will be getting the K1 & using it in place of my E6 when I'm listening to my Fostex T50RP MK3 cans... :)

I actually do have the 6S Plus, not sure why I neglected the Plus part. Works on mine beautifully just not the iPhone 5, 5S or iPad Air I tried it on.

If all goes well my K1 review should be up somewhere this week. And then I'm off to San Fransisco, honeymoon. Woohoo!

How is the K1 in compare to the E10/E17/E18?
Can i connect it to speakers too? (Harman Kardon)

If i am using HD598, it's better to connect them to a fiio DAC & AMP or to the headphones jack of my pionner VSX522 receiver?

Thanks :)

Well it's a totally different device than the other three at a different price point and form factor. I have the E10k and K1 and both are more than capable of amping my Philips Fidelio X2 but it takes the E10k to get my Sennheiser HD600s where I want them (in High Gain mode).

  1. With the K1 expect a peak SPL of ~112 dB
  2. With the E10k, E17 expect a peak SPL of ~119 dB
  3. With the E18 expect a peak SPL of ~121 dB

The E10k, E17 and E18 should all have a Line Out that would allow you to connect them to a receiver should you want to play your music from your speakers. However, that isn't what these devices were necessarily designed to do. Just keep that in mind. The K1 could technically do this as well but you wouldn't be outputting a line level output (and I'm not actually sure what the line out is for any of these much less 2 volts).

It depends on how you're connecting things:
  1. If you're listening to your computer through a digital connection (Optical/Coaxial) to your Pioneer VSX-522, then don't mess things up by adding the FiiO into the mix.
  2. If you're listening to your computer through USB to any of the FiiO devices, chances are directly from FiiO is the way to go vs Line Out to the receiver (they are all capable of powering your HD 598s).
  3. If you're listening to your computer through a mini stereo/RCA cable to your Pioneer, you would benefit from either of the two modifications above.

+1
It is far more logic to compare the K1 to the Q1 and the E17K, seeing they share the same DAC chipset, the Texas Instruments PCM5102. My review is online now but I have only compared it to the E17K from your list (same DAC).

Cheap but not nasty. The K1 has been reviewed on Headfonia. See http://www.headfonia.com/review-fiio-k1-the-even-more-entry-dacamp/
Maybe a PC maker might bundle it as a free gift as we already have so many mice :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Seriously though, I'm pretty sure there is a market for that.

It's fine, although you're doing double amping the K1 has a clean and not very loud output so don't be afraid of doing it.
