FiiO K1--smaller and better for less
Feb 27, 2016 at 8:20 PM Post #271 of 408
So I just picked up the cable linked below from Amazon and connected the k1 to the 6p and it worked right away. I am in no way shape or form an audiophile but can definitely hear a jump in volume when connecting the k1 to the 6p. The cable is about 3 ft long, although I wish it was shorter I'm just happy to confirm it does work great. No longer needing to connect a ton of adapters to make it work.

It does not work on my android device (LG G2, Moto G, SS Galaxy S6). However it works fine on my tablets running dual OS (android 5.1 and windows 10) and connected via (microusb) OTG port.

The USB spec is 3 metres for low speed devices and 5 metres for high speed, it's a digital connection so any signal issues will be sorted by the device.

I wouldn't go beyond 3 metres personally.

Not really sure, but that's the specification for USB.

I've seen USB repeaters on sale so I guess there must be an issue with reliable communication above that distance.

I was considering the K1 to use as an improvement over my built-in Dell laptop soundcard, but I would like to use it both at work where I use a collection of IEM's and headphone's as well as at home where I'm using a pair of active M-Audio AV40. From what I read it would be a bad idea to drive those speakers from an amp like the K1? I could move up to a E10 or something, but that's a lot less portable to drag around back and forth to work plus a bit more expensive.

The FiiO K1 is just an external DAC or sound card. It would not be powering your M-Audio AV40 speakers because those are self-powered. It would simply be providing audio signal to them.

Bottom line, it will work. It will sound better than the Dell build-in soundcard. For headphones I've used it on IEM (Klipsch S4i, R6, Etymotic ER4, Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro...) headphones as well as larger headphones (V-Moda Crossfade, Philips Fidelio X2/27, Sennheiser HD-600, Grado SR80i, AudioTechnica ATH-M50s...) with great results. I have even used it as a source for my desktop Klipsch iFi Speaker System with wonderful results.

It's $40, sounds great, punches way outside its weight class and even works with an iPhone simply using an iPhone Camera Adapter.

Which phone? - so far won't work with my 5S which is a pity.

Thanks - pretty sure it won't work, but if you could confirm that would be great :)
