Simple styling and grill pattern.
If were to design around just an open-back then I would slim down the cups as much as possible and aerate the cup side walls. For styling I would contour all the cup edges and do a different grill pattern.
I don't know if you have the time to try it, but I wonder if designing out the same cup shape as stock, but adding two or three 1mm sized bass tuning holes along the bottom, similar to how we used to tune bass on T50RPs, would work. It would be interesting to see how effective it would be to dial in preferred bass, while maintaining a closed back use case.
I might need to buy a small 3D printer, I have too many ideas starting to come out
What do you mean "newb"? No, no, no, I'm a newb, I just have a general idea of how stuff like that works. This is awesome man!
Also, have you thought about using magnets instead of screws or pegs? Pegs can break and screwing into plastic is prone to fail. You could probably easily stick a couple small bar magnets on the sides or small circular ones where the pegs are (or both). Then do the same thing on the back and voila, you can swap between open and closed in seconds.
Why not make a "frame" for the back and just put a metal mesh on it?
All good ideas and thanks. IME screws hold up well enough in 3DP filament but for longevity you can use metal screw inserts that you embed into the plastic with a soldering iron which Ive done before. Can also design around using nuts+bolts which is what I usually do for longevity.
Magnets would be really useful for swapping between cups. Hmmm
Thank you for posting those measurements. I just completed this mod and ran through a bunch of test tracks. My listening experience is tracking with your results.
I found both vents open did increase the bass substantially across the board, but I found bass/mid-bass to be a bit bloaty for me. Once I covered one vent I found it tamed the bass/mid-bass enough to be more natural sounding, but not lacking in proper timbre/weight/substance (pick your favorite buzzword).
Mids up through the top still sound the same for the most part, with great timbre, it is really just mid-bass down that I hear a difference.
While removing the cups does increase the airiness and soundstage slightly (enough to be noticeable at least), I would not say it is a huge difference. A little bit better is better than nothing though. While soundstage has not changed much, I am still hearing great instrument separation and placement.
I finally have a great open back set for listening at home now. I might have to buy another as you mentioned to have a closed back for travel, etc.

G'day mate. I see you're from Antarctica. I've got relatives over there. Do you know the Headwinkels by any chance? It's Maeve and Bosco Headwinkel. I think they're at number 35 if I remember correctly. Bosco used to run a fish gutting school ("Spill ya Guts" I think) and Maeve made and sold her own tinea cream. Small world.....
So just listening to FT1 for first time now. Listened to some tracks now. I am very impressed WOW it just sounds right to my ears. So very much musical engaging HP. Also impressed with layering both width and especially depth is great it also has an big weighty sound. Separation and details also great and it has a very dynamic sound with great rythm and timing. Drums hit very hard. Great deep bass to and satisfying treble sparkle. It just got very good timbre imo and very musical coherence. On Rock tracks at least. I listen to every genre so will get there. Oh and no sibilance whatsoever so far. Its an incredible great HP
I think so far and as little time i have listened it is better then AWAS.
I agree I just got mine from Bloom Audio. I am blown away for something at this price point. These are probably going to fall into the legendary class. I like my HE1000 Unveiled’s, but those are not $159 bucks! I think these are a bit bright, it doesn’t bother me in most things I listen to. I agree WOW.
XL 3DP cups posted earlier sounded pretty good but the increased weight made them an instant "NO THANKS". Ill have to work on making more reasonable sized cups later but for now I reassembled them back-to-stock so can loan out the headphone for impressions.
Listening to stock again and it sounds a little in-your-face compared to open-back or XL cups. I believe that is partly an effect of less warmth (bass + lower mids) but I like to imagine cup dimensions play a role as well.
I did an experiment and an unsure the meaning but something worth investigating more later.:
^ I covered my open-grill cups with tape, then incrementally removed a bit of tape per measurement. Less seal meant more warmth (lower-mids to mid-mids). The stock cups are vented by a little grill at the top of the black plastic that is between the cups and driver baffle.
Next move will be to make (reasonable-sized) closed-cups with their own vents when I get the FT1 back from loan.

Much more detailed, greater sound stage, open and airy. Better in almost every way of course. But there is a big difference between $2699 headphones and a $159.00 set. Think of a Bently vs. a Kia. The will both get you from point A to point B. But the experience is different. The F1 is a very dynamic, fun headphone and enjoyable.
