FiiO FD1 - 10mm 1DD IEM
Nov 18, 2020 at 8:25 PM Post #331 of 381
The FD1 are very nice sounding, and in fact I am purchasing them soon to replace my Sony XBA-N3 (hybrid - DD,BA) for mostly movies as I have fit issues and love the over and in ear design of the FiiO, otherwise the N3 are technically better and priced that way.
I have come from a long line of Sony iems and really enjoy the typical healthy bassy sound, you perhaps might find the FD1 to not have as much bass as you are accustomed to. The bass is there but I don't feel it hits as hard or as deep as any of my Sonys have.
I've learnt that specs alone don't often produce the results you were expecting like with driver size, my XBA-Z5 were 16mm and I went to a 10mm driver and although there are times I can hear differences in the bass presentation the tuning of the 10mm can often hit harder. Based on specs of the 13mm driver I would have chosen the FH1s.
I'm not trying to put you off the FD1 but I don't want you to be disappointed looking for that warmer sub bass Sony sound.

Thank you for your input, I will take into account your experience!

I always thought bigger driver = more bass.

I concur with this assessment. While the FD1 has a good amount of very clean bass, it may not be as much as you are accustomed to with Sony products. The KZ ZS10 Pro has more bass, but the treble from the BAs sound a bit metallic to me (my opinion). One of my bass head IEMs uses a 6mm DD for the bass, so driver size is not a good indicator.

Perhaps one of the BLON IEMs would be best for you. They use DDs. The BL03 has been the most popular one, and it has plenty of bass, but the fit is atrocious for many people. There have been a few newer BLON IEMs released, including the brand new BL01, which may be perfect for you, but people are only now receiving their orders of it.

Here are some threads to explore, post questions.

Edit: Oh, if considering the FiiO FD1, maybe also look into the Jade Audio EA1, which is the same IEM for less money.

Thanks for your opinion! I think the FiiO is out of the question then.

Yes, I've looked also into the BL03 but discarded it for the reason you mention; I haven't looked into the BL01 but will do, I will read those threads also, again thank you!

A fiiO rep has said the FH1s has more bass than the FD1. The FD1 has quicker bass per the fiiO rep.I can vouch that the FH1s has notable and enjoyable bass. For under $100, the FH1s is a serious contender for value, depending on your needs and taste.

Yes, I read that statement I think in this same thread. Well, you are one of the half that say the FH1s have more bass, the other half says the contrary, that's what I meant by very contradicting opinions!
Thank you for your input!

In fact, sometimes different feelings are not conflicts or contradictions. But the reference earphones are different.
FD1 versus FH1s.FD1 Bass is less massive but faster.FH1s BASS goes deeper, softer.
Of course, different people may still have different feelings.

I see... That only complicates everything, haha!

My FD1 set just arrived. Initial impressions (OOTB) are quite favorable. Very balanced and cohesive. Very nice tonality.

Edit 1: After a few hours of burn-in, I returned to the FD1 and notice an opening up of instrument separation and a mild increase in soundstage.

I agree. It is well tuned, with a good amount of really fast, clean bass, but not a ton of it.

Yup. I really appreciate the balanced, even-handed bass. The FH1s would be the fiiO, in the price range, to purchase for more bass.

Hey guys,

I bought the FD1 around 3 months ago and overall I am very happy with the sound, cable quality and so on but since a week I am having a serious noise in my right in ear when shaking my head a bit harder (sometimes I am jumping around my appartment while listening to good music, most of the time while cooking...). Imagine I would use them while jogging or doing any other sports activity. Wouldn't be possible with this clacking noise...
I am more and more convinced that there is a loose part inside my right in ear... I don't have it on the left side though and it was not there since the beginning.
Disclaimer: I never dropped the in ears or did any other kind of mechanical force on them. I am very cautious with my stuff.

Already contacted the support from the website where I bought it and the just said it is normal because sometimes the cables inside the inear have contact with the case and causing noise. I insisted that this is definitely not normal and I like to have another one or my money back... (last word is not spoken yet. I am waiting for the second reply)
To be fair there is a huge difference in terms of cable length within the two in ears. Left side has around 3 times that length of the right one (right one has noise, left side doesn't). Allthough the cable in the right in ear is so short, I don't see it moving inside the case and causing noise...

I am pretty sure that it is the driver case that is moving against the in ear case. At least this is what it sounds like.

Now to my question, is this a common issue or do you guys ever heard about something similar?

Thanks in advance!
Tom

Dear friend,

Did you try to reconnect the unit and the cable to check again? Does the issue happen in other player?

Did you buy from our authorized seller in Germany? If yes and the seller fails to help, you could also contact the distributor in Germany for checking about that for you.

Best regards

Hey,

I bought them at the official FiiO shop in germany (https://fiio-shop.de/), at least I think it is kind of official? (is this the distributor in Germany you mentioned?)
But good news, I will send my in ears to them and they will have a look at the problem. So I am good for the moment.

Back to the problem itself: I have this with and without a cable attached to the in ear and it is independent of the player.

Ok, it seems to be a problem with the unit. This is an authorized seller in Germany. They will help you about this problem.

Best regards

I've had the FD1's about 2 weeks now and they are a definite improvement over my previous daily drivers. I needed something that wasn't expensive but sounded good for day-to-day walking about and working, and so far the FD1's fit that bill. They did need quite a bit of burn-In, about 30 hours later they mellowed out quite a bit and punch deeper than they did OOTB. Not bad for $59, not bad at all.
