Hey guys. I am going to get a pair of Audio Technica AD700s and run them on an Auzentech Prelude and I had ~$40 dollars left in the budget. Someone recommended I get a Fiio E5. How much better would they sound on that amp and is there a better amp for $40 or less? Or should I go ampless and run them straight on the Prelude? Thanks guys!

they sound fine from a portable DAP or from headphone out. That still doesn't mean they're okay with crappy amps. That's because the purpose of amplification is not only to make the music sound louder, or to color the sound. Rather, the purpose of amplification is to provide enough current or voltage swing to the drivers to provide better control of its drivers - to make sure drivers dance to each note accurately as possible.

For example, Sony R10s and AT L3000s are low impedance, and they benefit greatly from very good amplification.
