I was wondering if you could please show me where to buy a cable to use between my Samsung galaxy S5 active and my fiio alpen e17. Could you please tell me where I could find one and what exactly is it called.

use an otg cable (micro usb to micro usb).
there are several people saying that it works with their S4, so I guess it should work with the S5 too.
if not, use a simple male to male stereo cable.

Sorry for the late reply. 

The E17 uses mini USB while your smartphone uses micro USB.  Unfortunately there's really no such thing as a mini to micro USB OTG cable, so the best you can do is a short micro USB male to USB A female OTG adapter cable like this

followed by a short regular mini USB male to USB A male data cable like this

Also, after getting these cables, you'll find the option to turn OFF USB charging on the E17 (USB charging->OFF in the menus) useful to maintain compatibility with your smartphone and prevent the E17 from drawing power from the smartphone.
