My subscription to NAV has expired and I don't feel like resubscribing because I feel the software is bloated and a drain on my system. Plus it's really annoying.

Is there any antivirus software out there that's free and works well? Kaspersky?

Kaspersky, Symantec, and McAfee are the three that consistently perform well. There are those who support free-AV (I do in principle as well) but dodgy performance has kept me away from them.

Kaspersky Personal is my favorite, trumps Norton by a long shot.

If you do decide to ditch Norton Antivirus, be sure to download the replacement uninstaller, SymNRT, from the Symantec support site. The regular Norton Antivirus uninstaller leaves a bunch of junk on your system.

Quite massively recommended -- NOD32.

Light on resources, tremendously effective. You wouldn't know it's there until it's asking you if you want to sever a connection with a site trying to install a trojan on your system (which you might want to do).

Any opinions on Avast?

I use to have Mcaffe and switched to Avast. It caught viruses that Mcaffe didnt. Oh and the best part is that its free!

I have used Norton, AntiVir (free) and McAfee in the past. Kaspersky is the best. User friendly, doesn't use too much CPU and I have never had any virus problems since I started using it.
