I had an idea. Pick out your favorite album(s) based on genre. Try to stick to one album though. When in doubt, pick the first album that pops into your head

:

Dub: Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom
Rap: Beatie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Jazz : Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser
Rock: Metallica - ... And Justice For All

Rock was a tough call. Guns and Roses came into mind, but I don't think the albums have the same lasting power as Metallica.

my fav's of the various "rocks" and others-

"Classic" rock: Billy Joel's greatest hits (esp. vol1)
"Modern" rock: Faith No More - King For A Day
"Experimental" rock: Mr Bungle's self-titled/California
"Industrial" rock: Gravity Kills' self-titled
"Folk" rock: Dispatch - Gut The Van
"Grunge" rock: Alice In Chains - Jar Of Flies
"Alternative" rock: Bush - The Science of Things
"Punk" rock: anything by Goldfinger (the actual punks may say Goldfinger is not punk, but they can screw)
Post-punk: At The Drive-in - Relationship of Command (or My Chemical Romance's first CD... can't decide)
Ska: Rocket From The Crypt - Scream, Dracula, Scream!!!
Metal: In Flames - The Jester Race
Electronic: Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians (esp. disc 2)
Rap/hiphop: Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

as you can see i mainly listen to rock, but, like most people here (which is great to see), i listen to a decent variety. i could have included several other catagories (classical, trip-hop, blues, and so on) since i like several other styles, but don't listen to enough of it to have a favorite.

Alright,
If anyone else seemed to notice, rap has taken a turn for the worse lately IMO.
I guess materialism sells, c'mon a song about Air Force Ones?
He didn't have anything better to rap about than his shoes?
For people who like rap with some meaning:

J-live ****
Talib Kweli
Please check out J-Live. Please.

Ill Al Skratch is good, some nice beats.
Spice 1 has some nice old gangsta music.
Master P of course.

Don't forget to check out some Nas or Biggie too, always classic.
Biggie - Juicy , one of my favorites

Just some of my favorite rap artists.
I suppose i should put some other genres too:

Smooth Jazz : Kirk Whalum (especially Can't Stop the Rain)
Rock: Metallica's always good
Alternative : Smashing Pumpkins (Infinte Sadness)
Classical: Can't really go wrong with anyone here, I'm partial to piano pieces. Moonlight Sonata anyone?
Latin: Reggetone I suppose, it's really the only group I know for latin.
Classic Rock: Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Queen, does Metallica count as classic yet?
Thats about all I can think of.

Again, if you like rap with meaning, J-Live. Trust me.

Peace

"Classic" rock: Led Zeppelin - III
Metal: Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles
Speed/thrash metal: S.O.D. - Speak English or Die
Grunge: Alice in Chains - Dirt
Hard rock: Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies (definately not metal/grunge)
"Pop" rock: Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music...
Rap: Run-D.M.C. - Raising Hell (because the Beastie Boys' rapness is under review)
Funk/rap rock: Infectious Grooves - The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move...
Humor: Cheech & Chong's Greatest Hit
Misc: Buckethead - Bucketheadland 2
Soundtrack: The Beavis & Butt-head Experience

There's many other albums I'd list, but I can't figure out what category they go in (or they just missed the cut), so here they are:

Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun
Queens of the Stone Age - R
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
