For me it would be...

Sonic Youth:
Best = Dirty / daydream nation / Goo (Yup they all tie for best!)
Fave = Murray Street

important distinction, great thread.

i like falconP's definition, though in some cases i neither recommend what i see as the best album NOR my own cherished favorite, but something accessible to the specific listener based on his or her usual listening fare.

No. I would say that their best is 2112, although my favorite is A Farewell to Kings.

yea, I almost said 2112 was the "Best" - at least that was the one that everyone said you should start with, this was back in the 80's..

I don't know if I have a favorite Rush album. I don't actually have that many, but FAREWELL TO KINGS "up there" for me too. I also have a soft spot for GRACE UNDER PRESSURE. I haven't really connected with them since then..

I've heard people say that, but I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. Later this month hopefully.

Anyhow, another example that jumps immediately to mind

Jimi Hendrix
Favorite: Electric Ladyland
Best: Are You Experienced?

I thought about the Smiths and the Cure, I don't know if I can pick a "favorite" for either one of those. I'd agree that QUEEN IS DEAD and DISINTEGRATION are the "best"'s however.

Isn't it funny how it seems like everyone has put in some time with Iron Maiden? :)

I think where NUMBER OF THE BEAST rules is that it's track-for-track their strongest album. The only slightly "weak" track is "Gangland" - now, I picked PIECE OF MIND as my favorite, even though it has a couple of weaker tracks, it has my favorite IM song "Revelations" - but really, it's kind of silly to pick between the two.. (and it's funny how you mentioned Catherine Wheel right next to Iron Maiden - I think with them, it pretty much always comes down to FERMENT or CHROME, I don't think I've ever heard anyone pick another one of their albums as being their favorite or best, though they do have some killer b-sides).

I was thinking about Judas Priest, and I really can't pick a favorite from them either, because my favorite songs are pretty evenly distributed among all their albums. I'd say their best album is SCREAMING FOR VENGENCE, it's the most direct, honest statement of what Judas Priest was. Though BRITISH STEEL is damn fine too (I love how they slip in that bit of reggae in "The Rage"). For me, DEFENDERS hasn't held up as well to the test of time, the production is so hopelessly dated to the mid-80's, and lyrically, they were starting to wear thin.. ("Eat Me Alive"?? ugh..) That being said, I still think "The Sentinel" is one of their best songs.

I agree on Ride, NOWHERE rules. GOING BLANK AGAIN starts and ends mightily, but wanders somewhat through the rest of the album..

I just was thinking about the Cocteau Twins.. I would have to say Best and Favorite would go to HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS. I have to admit though, I don't know TREASURE or VICTORIALAND as well as I should.. I guess it's always good to save something for a rainy day..

it is funny how Iron Maiden seems to be one of those universal bands people listen to even though they remain strictly Metal. i've definitely put in lots of time into Iron Maiden and still do, i have every studio album on CD to date, even though the new ones only get a few spins when they're new and then end up sitting somethere in my music collection.

THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST is their most consistant album, great from start to finish without an ounce of filler. many of their other albums have great songs but suffer from filler, like REVELATIONS for example, i cringe at "Quest For Fire" and "Sun and Steel" and have to skip right through it every single time. actually, it was hard for me to decide which i like better, IRON MAIDEN or THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST but i went with the latter since it really is their best alvum. IRON MAIDEN comes in at a strong second fave though, i looove "Remember Tomorrow" and "Phantom of the Opera."

Catherine Wheel coming after Iron Maiden, guess that was subliminal!

i didn't even think about the connection until after i read my own post. i love the story about how Rob begged Bruce not to be at one of their early gigs because some high profile critic was going to be there and he wanted Catherine Wheel to be reviewed on their own merits. well... Bruce came anyway, dressed in a loud orange boiler(jump)suit! way to blend in with the Shoegazing crowd!

both NOWHERE and GOING BLANK AGAIN are amazing albums; one thing with NOWHERE is that it's nearly perfect... add the TODAY FOREVER EP as on the remastered release and you have one perfect Ride album. GOING BLANK AGAIN has at least one filler "Making Judy Smile" (i skip it everytime), and adding the period b-sides doesn't really improve the album; "Grasshopper" is an interesting instrumental but nothing more, "Stampede" and "Howard Hughes" are also nice songs but can't compare with "Leave Them All Behind" and "OX4." the four songs on TODAY FOREVER EP is just as good if not better than the NOWHERE material... NOWHERE gets my nod.
