I am surprised no one mentioned the chopin no.1 for piano. my favourite,
and chopin is my favourite for piano in general.
I still have to buy myself a copy of rachmaninov the 3rd for the piano (it's the one on the movie "shine" no...? hope i am not mistaking).

I like lots of concerto's, Gidon Kremer's Tchaikovsky got my love started for classical music a long time ago, so it has a special place in my heart.

I listened to Elgar- and Haydn cello concerto lately played by Jacqueline Du Pre, Liszt
2nd concerto by Lazar Berman and Mutter's Sibelius. Wonderful stuff

I'm piano player, but strangely, I like listening to violin.
Favorite concertos by instrument:
Piano: Rachmaninov's 2 and 3-- Favorite rendition is by Rachmaninov himself. From the CD (Rachmaninov plays Rachmaninov
Rhapsody in blue- Gershwin
Schumann- Piano Concerto in A minor-- Beautiful.

Violin:
The Devil's Trill - Tartini ( I know this isn'a concerto... but heck, it's as hard, of not harder.)
Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor: Fav. Rendition is by Christian Ferras.

Cello:
Dvoark

Schumann does nothing for me, don't know why..

Same with Chopin..sounds like ok background tune to me, that's it..
It's like they operate on a different air-wave

For anyone looking for some off the beaten track concertos, I can highly recommend Hyperion's Romantic Concerto series (I am most familair with the piano series, but have heard good things about the others too). A few of my favorites would be:

Alnaes
Lyapunov
Brull
Sauer/Scharwenka (fabulous disc)
Mendelssohn Double Concerto

Last Winter I picked up Buckbinder's Mozart Piano Concertos and I've been addicted to them ever since. It seems like there's something to love in every piece. Can't really single out which is my favorite piece, I love 'em all equally.

Mozart's piano Concerto #20 is my favorite piece, regardless of genre, of all time. I don't know what it is about it.

Beethoven's 3rd would follow

Violin would be Beethoven then Brahms followed very closely by Mendelssohn.

Cello Saint Saens

Mozart Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor hits home for me because I played it
Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor also does cause I'll be learning it soon

But I also really really love these and want to learn them someday:
Saint-Saens Piano Concerto in G minor
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1
Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3

Reviving a great thread...

My favorite concertos (at the moment):

Piano: Busoni, Prokofiev 2, Barber
Recordings: Hamelin for Busoni, and for Prokofiev 2, it's very close between Gutierrez, Ashkenazy and Tozer, Browning/Slatkin for Barber

Cello: Prokofiev's Sinfonia-Concertante, Barber, Dvorak
Recordings: Chang/Pappano for Prokofiev, Isserlis/Slatkin for Barber, du Pre/Groves (Live) for Dvorak

Also love Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra.

Not that knowledgeable about violin concertos unfortunately.
