Yes, I am quite lazy in some stupid ways.

Recommendations for plug ins that will give me the ease and functionality of Internet Explorer, without all the hassle and spyware vulnerabilities.

And any tips for what to tweak and turn off in Firefox or customizations would be great too.

Yeah, I'm learning the hard way, but I'm learning, nonetheless.

my intellimouse forward and back buttons work fine in firefox with no plugins. that's odd if your mouse doesn't work that way.

Plugins:

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Flash Player
Java
Quicktime
Real Player
Windows Media Player

Extensions (These are simply useful little tools - not necessary):

ForecastFox
CustomizeGoggle
Define Word

That should do it

A NOTE ABOUT THE PLUGINS:

For plugins, you really only need to install them once firefox asks you to. For example, if you wish to view a flash file, you can install the flash plugin AUTOMATICALLY. So really you don't need to download/install everything all at once - only when you need to.

Hope this helps any!

Here some extention I use. I didn't do any extensive search so they may be better extention out there.

Plain Text Link https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...info.php?id=78

You can highlight a plain text and go to it. Example If I only say go to head-fi.org it won't create an link so you can left click highlight then right-click select open in new tab

Translate
https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...nfo.php?id=181
It use altavista babelfish to translated so if I have a pages in japanese or German I can easly see an english translation. faster than go to altavista each time and copy the text or url. Usefull if there is some japanese info on new phones or in ebay germany =)

MiniT
https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...nfo.php?id=176
to drop and drag tabs sometime you want to reorganise your tabs for easyer switching betweem them

Download them all.
https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...nfo.php?id=201
Download all the image or files or anyting on a webpage you design the filter and you can select/deselect element,

Tabbrowser preference
https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...nfo.php?id=158
to configure tabbrowsing

It has to do with your mouse. I had to change the settings on my MX1000 (oddly, it was fine for the MX500)
Just change preference to "keystroke" and type "Alt + ->" for foward and "Alt + <-" for back

my list of must-have extensions:
adblock
mouse gesture
auto fill
webmailcompose (when clicking an email link, it will direct you to webmail ie. gmail. very handy)
download statusbar
tab clicking options (close a tab by double clicking it)
ie view (open the current page in IE. must-have for websites that dont work with firefox)
super dragandgo (as a lazy person, its my top pick)
open download
pdf download
image toolbar
gmail notifier (auto login and so much better than the official notifier.)

I like the all-in-one mouse gestures. The thumb button on my mouse is "back" on web pages. I also have gestures set up so that holding down right mouse and dragging left is back, holding down right mouse and dragging right is forward. Aside from those two, I pretty much only use two other gestures - one to open a new tab, and one to load my start page in the current tab. I have a gesture to close the current tab, but I don't use it often.
