How do I get songs in foobar 2000 to "fade" when I press the stop or pause button ? Rather than having them abruptly stop .

Newer foobar only has that feature in DirectSound output. Settings under foobar Preferences -> Advanced -> Playback (node) -> Fading

go into preferences > playback > output and you'll find that option there.
