The cheapest for the possible best sound? I would recommend buying a iPod 5.5g (with the wolfson sound chip) to pair with EX600. I just bought an iPod 5.5g/30GB for $30 from Craiglist. The new EX600 can be bought for $120. With $150 altogether you have a decent portable setup.

You have option to upgrade the hard drive by yourself to 240GB for additional $120.

Edit: Of course rockbox the ipod and Apple firmware sucks period.

If you can actually find a iPod 5G this is a solid choice.

It's not hard to find from the area I live. Most people selling them just want to get rid of the old pods without knowing how good the wolfson's.

You could also buy off ebay the working ones or broken ones. many of the broken ones are probably just need to have the battery and/or hard drive replaced.
