William Orbit - Strange Cargo Hinterland

This is an album I listen to at night or when I'm studying. It's pretty good and gets me in that focused mood

My favorite type of music is Ambient, here are my suggestions.

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...music&n=507846

This double cd is awesome, if you purchase one ambient cd, make it this one, great variety and you can easily fall asleep too it, the track Rhubarb is one of my favorite songs.

Biosphere - Substrata
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=music

Thought by many to be the best ambient cd of the 90s, purely chilled out, I recommend this highly.

Matthew Florianz has a lot of good mp3s on his website
http://www.matthewflorianz.com/

Finally I recommend you listen to some good ambient internet radio.

Cryosleep - Zero Beat Guaranteed
http://207.200.96.225:8022/listen.pls

www.sleepbot.com <-- Great station also.

I definately second the air and alpha reccomendations. Their best albums are moon safari and stargazing respectively, and both make amazing chill out albums

How about some of the more ambient shoegaze bands like Slowdive.

For chilling out, I'd reccommend Auburn Lull, especially their album "Cast From A Platform". This thing will plant you in an open frosty field somewhere in autumn Michigan waiting to get into orbit. You will definitely day dream as it's enveloping but not enough to distract you from what you may be doing.

If you're into the jazzier and more hip hop of sound, I'd reccomend Fat Jon "Heavyweight Light Weight" and "Wave Motion".

I agree with Svperstar and must suggest Biosphere. I would describe the music as soundscapes coming at you like waves.(that's the best I can describe it) It is the most calming and relaxing music on the planet. I would recommend the CD's:
Substrata and Patashnik.

If you are looking for more upbeat music then I would recommend
Lemon Jelly- "Lost Horizons"

And er ya go.

I'll have to contribute a contrary opinion: any compilation with the words "Chillout," "Ibiza" or "del Mar" anywhere in the title is horrible commercial pseudo-hipster nuevo-jazz-lounge garbage that nobody should ever listen to.

Get some real ambient music instead. Aphex's SAW2 is a nice start.

edit and yeah I like Substrata a lot; great album. However, the tracks on it with guitar really, really, really irk me... a lot. Nevertheless it's a nice album.

YES! You said what I was thinking but I wanted to be nice being new to the forum and all.

"Chillout"/Del Mar is pure trash 90% of the time, unlistenable.

When someone says they like chill/ambient, then they say Cafe Del it makes me feel the same as if someone said they are a fan of rock and their favorite band is Limp Bizkit.

I 2nd the opinion on Substrata, I always skip over "Times when I know you'll be sad" but the rest of the cd is heaven.

Air is a good talented band, Virgin Suicides soundtrack is a favorite as well as moon safari, but they aren't really chillout/ambient.

So titaniumx3, get Aphex Twin SAW2 or Biosphere - Substrata and skip the Eurotrash groups

But the real stand-out ones are imo:

Others maybe be Blue States too.
