I purchased an inexpensive headphone extension cable from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-40408-Female-Extension/dp/B0012MMW7E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309709007&sr=8-1 to use with a pair of headphones I recently purchased, but when using the cable, the sound degrades to the point where it sounds like the singer or music is hollow, like in a tunnel.
When I plug the phones in directly, it is fine again.
The phones have a built in mic you can use with a smartphone if you want along with a small click controller to move to next track, pause, etc. so it has three rings, while the extension cable has two (I can't find one with three). Does the three rings while the extension cable has two have something to do with the sound quality or do you think the cable is the issue.
Before I spend more money on cables, I want to see if it is because the cable is a cheap cable not the two to three rings the cable causing it.

Thanks all.

welcome to headfi, no, the rings have nothing to do with the sound quality, that just dictates whether or not the remote can be functional or not. but man, those must be some crap cables. I have never had the chance to try different cables etc etc

It is not the cable but the connection in my opinion..

You didn't mention what headphones you are using. Many people will claim that cables (including extensions) don't make a difference, but considering the one you purchased only cost $2.91 it could very well be made of shoddy materials which is causing the sound issue. I would try using it with another pair of headphones to see if you get the same results. If you want a good quality extension try the Grado one.

I dont agree after the explanation that the sound is soo crappy with this cable..This couldnt be the material to be honest and before getting a Grado one you can make in a DIY process..

Thanks all for the reply. I am now trying them with another pair of headphones; which I should've done before (more expensive Senns), and it is fine, so it isn't the cable. Not a big deal, the headphones aren't high end, they are Skullcandy low riders I got on sale for $15, that usually sell for 30-35 I think.

No love for Skullcandies, do they have a bad rep? I see people wearing them on the MTA in NY and CTA in Chicago (I am a contractor so move around a lot), so I thought I'd try them. Oh well, $15 not a huge loss I guess.
