I know that IEM's are In Ear Monitors and all that good stuff, but what advantages do the provide over other forms of headphone? I also noticed that they are all very expensive and don't actually provide good sound quality until the $300+ range AFAIK. So why do IEM users prefer these over standard headphones?

IEMs can provide great sound quality for way less than $300

Ety ER4S/P are very good quality for $200 +/-. I prefer IEMs over HP when portablitiy is an issue or when isolation from outside noise is needed.

Most have a good set of both (IEM & HP).

personally i think the CX300 for $50 is great value and provides awesome SQ and isolation. it isnt comparble to headphones around $100 but its a compromise for portability and isolation.

They can imagine that they are live artistes on the stage?

Anyway, though the SQ

rice ratio is not great, it is sure good that they is great isolation.

Also, I feel that they look the best, amongst all other earphones/headphones.

1. IEMs can be driven on very low volumes. I want my ears to stay intact

2. The are very light and can be very comfortable (not all models feel comfortable with all users).
3. You can listen to high quality music wihtout looking like a lunatic in public (although you have to be very careful because you will hear zero of the outside world while running around). Having good isolation can also be a bliss.

The UM2's are also excellent for 'being' Secret Service by putting one hand mysteriously to your ear and looking around like this:

sound isolation and portability are what i like about IEM's. i always go to starbucks, so having something that will block out the grinder noise and people chatting is a big plus.

the im716s provide good sound quality at 70/80 shipped, my er6is which were slightly more than that aren't quite as good but overall I would still rate them good, thats all i need to add since your question has already been answered.
