Seems quite possible if they fell and the headband hit something hard. That finish chips off quite easy.

The band is carbon fibre. I used to have a carbon fibre master key that looks, smells, and feels exactly the same.

One problem with the material is that paint doesn't necessarily like it as much as plastic, and it's not very flexible.

Having said that, this particular band doesn't look bad at all with just black finish like the HD580.

mine served me for over 2 years without a single problem.

The pics are got from a Chinese headphone forum, the guy claimed that he did nothing except occasionally used it below 50° F, their guess is the bending of the headband that's causing the problem. But Senn's got some QC problem too.
