Hi there folks.

Need some help from the specialists.

I got myself an Ety 4P but I rarely use it. I just can't find the best fit and can't use it comfortably. It's unbearable to the point of using my SH EX300 most of the time. Problem is, I prefer the sound of the Ety.

Is there anything I can do to make it more comfortable? Use a new tip, maybe? I tried all the original tips that come with the bud. Never tried to adapt other brand tips.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

How long have you had them? At first the tri-flanges felt extremely uncomfortable and well, just plain weird.... like I had some sort of Star-Trekkian Borg-like thing burrowing into my head. But, I gave them some time, wore them for short intervals to allow my ear canals to "break in" and now I really don't have any issues with them. And the sound... wow. It's worth the time to get used to them. The foam tips still don't really work for me though. Not that they're uncomfortable. They just don't hold their seal.

These are quite comfortable but nothing can beat tri-flanges SQ. Give them some time, after initial break in they become quite comfy. Moisten them up before inserting into ears. You can speed up break in by boiling them in the water for a couple of minutes. (haven't tried that myself, so don't ask for exact recipe).

Same experience here. It takes time, and overcoming the demoralizing realization that your ear canals are no longer virgins.

Do you think the tips you are using might be too large? They standard ones were for me. I e-mailed Etymotic and asked for samples of other size and shape tips. Turned out the very smallest foams were great. Considering the price of replacing those tiny foams on a regular basis, I decided on Westone custom tips from my local audiologist. I can wear them as long as I wish, plus they slip in and out in a snap.

Hei guys,

Thanks for taking the time.

Yes, the original flanges are too big. I feel a terrible pressure in the canal after a few minutes. It hurts.

I'll contact Etymotic and ask for samples. In the mean time, could you please tell me where to go for custom tips?

Again, THANK YOU.

ya, $20 for 10 at apple store (retail price, medium size only) and you can reshape them with sharp scissors to something that seals comfortably.

Also try moistned triple flanges with the outer or inner flange cut off. That's about $7 of experimentatin.

Westone, the hearing aid manufacturer, supplies custom ear molds for a variety of other uses, like swim plugs, hearing protection, cell phones. You would get them through an audiologist, who is a doctor who tests hearing and other ear things, takes the impression for the molds, and handles having them made up. The Westone website will list dealers for your zip code. Unless you already have someone in mind (the one I used was in my regular clinic), I'd suggest calling them and getting a quote. There have been several threads discussing customs. A search for Westone, Ety and custom should bring them up.

Etymotic has a tip they call "Baby Blues". I didn't get to try that, but it looked promising.

ko guys. Got the Shure Olives today. HUGE difference. I mean, HUGE.

Now I can use the ER4P for hours.

Thanks for the hint.

I also ordered some baby blues to test. Will let you know.

Again, thanks for the help.

Shure olives give the Ety IEMs some much-needed bass. The triflanges had virtually none, even with a proper seal.

I guess everyone's different. I find the supplied tri-flanges to give the bassiest and most naturally balanced sound. For me the Shure Olives just don't sound right. It rolls off the highs too much.
