From picking up anything that caught my ear or eye over the years I inevitably now have a number of electronic based CDs that don't seem to belong to any grouping genre other than being 'electronic'. From Wendy Carlos' electronic Beethoven to dark ambient Lustmord to Depeche Mode I realize the field is vast but I'd still ask for what you consider essential pieces for an electronic collection that wishes to expand. Thanks.

Kruder and Dorfmeister - The K & D Sessions
Archive - Londinium
Zero 7 - Simple Things
Morcheeba - Big Calm
Nightmares on Wax - Smokers Delight

If I had to choose five, they would be these. If I had to choose one, it would be K & D. That album is just mind blowingly great.

David Parsons -- Parkirama; Yatra
Giles Reaves -- Wunjo (may be hard to find)
Vangelis -- Heaven and Hell; Direct

John Flomer -- Night in the Vapor Jungle
Steve Roach -- Dreamtime Return; Blood Machine
Steve Roach/Vidna Obmana -- Well of Souls
Robert Rich -- Numena/Geometry; A Troubled Resting Place

Klaus Schulze -- pass. Everyone says he is an important figure, but none of his music says anything to me.

A few more, mostly uncategorisable except under the board umbrellas "new age", "electro-pop" or "ambient".

The more melodic ones:
  1. Jean Michel Jarre -- Oxygene; Equinoxe (some also recommend Waiting for Cousteau; I don't find it special)
  2. Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) -- BMG; Technodon
  3. The Orb -- Orblivion
  4. Mark Isham -- Vapor Drawings
  5. Ray Lynch -- No Blue Thing
  6. Channel Light Vessel -- Automatic
  7. Tim Clark and Kevin Brahney -- Rain
The more progressive, challenging ones
  1. Michael Danna and Tim Clement -- Summerland
  2. Michael Hoenig -- Departure from the Northern Wasteland
  3. Constance Demby -- Aeterna; Novus Magnificat
  4. Jeff Greinke -- Cities in Fog
As for synth-pop, how come no one remembers Erasure? Among the synth-pop groups that came out in the 80s, Erasure is the only one that remain true to their form. I say, I say, I say is such a sweet and beautiful album.

Another essential synth-pop album in the 80s is Upstairs at Eric's by Yazoo.

Royksopp-Melody AM, and The Understanding.

Fairly recent releases (i.e. last few years), but already a classic in my collection.
