Eric McChanson Headphone Amp??

Acting on the premise that Eric picked an eminently qualified power tube for the Ultimate, I have been exploring my stash of 6N7 tubes (using an ECC31 to 6SN7 adapter).
These tubes sound very good in the Ultimate. Here is today's roll - a Neotron (aka Visseaux) 6N7GT:IMG-1971.jpg
Please notice the French sculptural artwork inside the tube - it sounds as good as it looks!

I do like my pair of Mazda 6N7G (Visseaux). In fact I love all the 6N7G and 6N7 in my collection including of course the ECC31 and 6A6. :)

15 Ultimaters since April of this year is an achievement. I know of 2 other owners but don't know their names. One was the first to get the Junior Wooden 6Y6G amp before it even became known as Ultimate. The other, Eric modify the 6bx7 amp into Ultimate for him.

So that's 17 in 6 months. :xf_cool:

Are these special tubes then? Have you tried them before? Could you not buy them? Or are you just curious?

6K6GT is a variant of 6V6GT. It's a Haltron brand and that's good. I would buy it but it's stated there that the seller won't ship to Australia. The price of EUR 9.35 is cheap.

.... and it's gone now since I posted it lol.

The Haltron brand was part of the British company Hall Electric company that distributed valves and components in the UK.

They tended to buy stock from all European factories as well as Japan. They had a contract to supply the ministry of defence and so had had test facilities to supply to MOD standard.

I like APOS and have bought gear from them, but their statement frum the link you provided that it is a "substantial upgrade from standard NOS tubes" seems a bit much, even as marketing hype. Looking forward to your further impressions.
I understand the views.👍👍👍
What I can say at the moment is that it plays quite linear, I suspect that the EL81 Ultron adds to it and the Ultimate is fine.
Tonight I'll try some more output tubes to see if it stays or changes.
Gave the tube another night together with the Ultrons to get more hours on it.

More impressions to come to see which driver tube it might conqurate with, off the top of my head I'd say it's Siemens where the tube shares the chair, but I'm still figuring that out.😉😉😉

For a New Stock it makes an excellent impression and job so far.

Yes , but I haven't tried it yet, waiting until my Ultimate has over 200 hrs, at around 130hrs at the moment and loving these Svetlana KT88's , such textured base, hard to resist

I'm going to burn in my Ultimate to 400 hours. At the moment it's 288 hours. So I am back to using peasant tubes - RCA 6J5 and Sylvania 6Y6GA. :)

This is for all Ultimaters. You might as well learn about 6y6, 6v6, 6f6, 6w6, 6k6 as these are your bread and butter power tubes and some of them can even be used as driver tubes.

This information by Eric Barbour on the Baby Blues Bottles: The history of 6V6 is the best I've read. So please digest it well. Read from page 3 to page 10.
