Epic symphonic work (Sound tracks, Classical, etc)

Would Phantom of the Opera qualify?

Maybe O/T without the choral presence, but a worthy addition to anyone's soundtrack library. It's been over played a bit and "covered" on a few trailers and documentaries, but popular for a reason. I recommend the entire soundtrack if you have a mind to peruse it.

Bad recording quality but an epic piece none the less (at least I feel it is). Wish there was a better recording of it.

I love this kind of music :)
There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread - the classical stuff, movie soundtracks, some anime bgm - but I wanna open up a new ... I wouldn't say genre, but a different source for this kind of epic, powerful, orchestral choir music.

Trailer music. That's what you're looking for, and boy can you find a lot of it.

Here's an example:

Used in a Spider Man trailer.

Here's one that I don't think was used in any trailers, and isn't a short build-up like most movie trailer music is. It's more like an entire song, is extremely beautiful, and is the song that got me hooked on this stuff. Made by the same group (Immediate Music).

If you do like this, look up some more of Immediate Music's stuff. Another group that makes trailer music is X-Ray Dog.

My favorite piece by X-Ray Dog. this is a modified version of one of the pieces that they made for one of the Lord of the Rings trailers (the one here is Gothic Monsters, the original is Gothic Power, also made by X-Ray Dog).

This might be the music you're looking for:

It's anime, I know, but if I'm guessing right, this should be more in the vein for the music you're looking for, most of the related also have choirs. What you can also have a look at Hans Zimmer's Inception album, mind-blowing movie, mind-blowing album, though has no choir which you are looking for.

Yeah, erm... Beethoven's 9th, sit down, enjoy, and subsequently jizz.

Edit: By familiar, do you mean you've listened to all of it? or just a crappy snip bit that was cliche-rised by culture? It absolutely pains me when I see a "Simply Beethoven" boxset in HMV and to find only the 4th Movement on its own, the 4th movement is absolutely nothing without the glory of the 1st, the technical showpiece of the second, and the pacing of the 3rd. (Yes, it is ironic since the 4th movement references the 1st, 2nd and the 3rd movement)

If you have, then there's no hope left... abort! abort! But try Dvorak's 9th

Though I'd say that the Choir in Beethoven's 9th wasn't that spectacular, apart from "Was the mode stern getelt" part, only the orchestra and the tenors, sopranos and pals were the star of the symphony, I felt the choir was just there to add to the atmosphere.

And to be constructive to the discussion, Grieg's Peer Gynt suite, which includes in the hall of the mountain king, as well as Ase's death, which is pretty good as well

Familiar as in I've performed it before. I play the viola and listen to classical music all day at work (since I work in a violin shop other music is not really a good idea).

Very nice, a bit on the simple side though. Musically it doesn't have a lot of depth that I expect in more epic pieces. Speaking of which I should rename the thread now that I've been gifted with a proper description.

Actually, I can't believe I forgot these:

And yes, I know I'm spamming Code Geass somewhat

Very interesting anime music. I've never seen Code Geass, perhaps I'll try to watch it.

The 3rd clip you linked reminded me of a similarly epic theme, this time from an old video game I played all the time years ago:

Edit: Been listening to several of the links on youtube from the sound track of Code Geass. Lots of great stuff there. I have to get that.

On the topic of epic (though not symphonic) anime music, I submit the opening to Ghost in the Shell, easily one of my favorites.

Also much more recent, Soul Eater opening:
