This is a bit of a niche question, but I'll shoot.
I recently acquired a Macbook Pro Retina.
On the specs page (http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/), under "audio", it states:

I'm a Recording Arts Major using Logic Pro to produce music, and I'm about to buy some (active) studio monitors.
From the audio theory I've learned here, a line out is highly preferable to a headphone out for output to speakers.
I've gone into both the "Sounds" preferences and the "Audio" section of System Report, and found no setting to enable the analogue line-out. From what I understand, the optical line-out is detected and enabled by OSX automatically.
I've called Apple Support, and after a referral, one of the more experienced techs told me that he's heard of third party software that gives the user more control over the apple hardware. Settings not available in the operating system can be tweaked.
Does anyone know of any such software? I thought I'd come here first, then research on my own.
Or should I just live with the headphone out, at least until I purchase a nice audio interface? I honestly think the headphone out sounds pretty great, but I'd like to get as much detail and power as possible for my monitors.
