I know there is price disparity between the two, but how do the two compare? I am looking to upgrade the DACs in my system before I call it quits for now.

Right now I am using the DACs on my Audigy2zs but I would like something a little better.

As always, with polls - you're sure that I buy what the majority says (hehehehe)... jk! It just turned out that way the past 2 times.

AV-710 + VDA-1. You can upgrade the PSU later, .

(EMU1212 + VDA-1 is just.. wow. $100+ for 0% difference

.. unless you want to A/B).

But of course.. this is because I have a VDA-1.

If you want to keep the GS-1.. the VDA-1/VAC-1 looks exactly like the faceplate of the GS-1. Identical screws, LED, silkscreening, etc. Looks very good!

Why would you go with E-MU 1212 + VDA if you're going with the optical out?

AV-710 offers bit-perfect digital, too. At that point you're just worried about jitter, and the E-MU ain't gonna do anything with that.

The 1212m will have a better sounding digital out. It will also give you better modding platform.

I wouldn't get the external power supply for the DAC. Modding it should be more cost effective.

I recommend as an upgrade plan
AV710 -> glass toslink -> DAC
Mod DAC
Acquire modded 1212m

For a computer soundcard, the 1212m has one of the better digital outputs in my own personal listening tests.

In the very beginning, it would be more cost effective to spend money modding the DAC than getting stock 1212m in my opinion.
