I'm getting interested in the EMU 0404 but I'm really concerned on how to connect my headphones (Senns HD595) & speakers (Klipsch iFi) to the card simultaneously.
Basically I want to have everything set so I don't have to be constantly plugging and unplugging cables when I switch back and forth between headphones and speakers (I already discussed this in another thread at the amplification forums).
I spotted two adapters in RadioShack that seem to do the trick:

Radio Shack 1/4" Mono to Phono Y-Adapter

Radio Shack Gold-Plated Y-Adapter, Stereo Phone Jack to Phono Plugs
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

The second one looks better because is gold-plated, only caveat is the 1/4" phono plug which is stereo instead of mono. Does it matter?

EDIT: Just found other similar adapters:

American Recorder (ART) 1/4 Male Stereo to 2 RCA Female Adapter

Planet Waves 1/4" Mono To Dual RCA Adapter (somewhat expensive)

EDIT 2: Found the gold-plated Radio Shack adapter, mono version:

Gold Series Mono-to-Mono Plug Adapter

Just grabbed two of them a bit cheaper from eBay

I don't know if it would tax the emu1212 card or your power supply too much but if you want to do it here is what you need. Each output is in mono, so you have a 1/4 plug for the right channel and a 1/4 plug for the left channel. Normally you go from dual 1/4 mono to rca. But you need to get two rca connectors for each 1/4 plug. So! The stereo adapters you posted won't work. Well, they will, but its overkill, and uncesary. What you should get is two of the 1/4 mono to rca adapters.

But I can't tell you the quality difference between them. One thing you need to look out for is to make sure the rca cable you will be using will fit on the adapter. There will be no problem with the chrome-ish y adapter but they may not fit on the other one. Personally I would just take my rca cable with me, go to radio shack and check to make sure it fits on the adapter I choose. Thats how I think it will work at least. But like I said, I don't know what this will do to your computer or sound card. Try posting in the computer forum and that might get a better response. Good luck. If you do it let me know how it works.

the easiest answer is to grab a vintage receiver for 30 bucks, feed it a line in signal from the 0404 via 1/4 to rca cables, then bingo, the receiver can amp your speakers and probably has a headphone out too. that's the quick and dirty solution. what is NOT a solution is trying to hook the cans (and definitely not speakers! unless they are powered and can take a line in signal) directly to the 0404. that is a line out signal, and won't be healthy for your cans. put an amp between the 0404 and your cans and you'll be happy.

Hi, thanks for the advice, I already had edited the original post after I realized the stereo adapters wouldn't work. I even recommended the third adapter from your list

Anyway, once I get the 0404 I will post my findings. Oh, and BTW, I'll be using an amp (Gilmore Lite) between the sound card and the cans (HD-650), the speakers (Klipsch iFi) on the other hand, have a line in connection for this purpose.
