Thanks for posting those up, for $1.25 each ($2.50/pair) I cant think of a good reason not to buy a few blind. The entertainment/learning value from a failed experiment is worth more than what they cost. If they work well so much the better.

They were in sale yesterday for 0.90$. I would order some but with shipping to Europe and all... Could reveal to be some amazing little speakers. Or turn out to be horrible, but like you said... at that price.

Just a small update....
 
Finally got the cans put together.  The drivers definately need a good burn in.  Very hollow and flat sounding when I first hooked it up.  After 2 hours of playing things are a little better.  Going to leave them on for a day or two and see how they sound.  So far so good.  I will get some pictures up with a price list of the supplies.

So I ended up using a set of head band and cups from a Sony MDR 7506 from Trew Audio Inc.  Canare L-4E5C braided with a stand of kevlar kite string to give a little strength to the cable into each cup.
 
 

 
The pads were from ebay.  Nice fit.
 
 

 
The drivers mounted to 1/4" oak.  Drilled a few holes to vent into the cup.

Still burning the set in.  So far not bad....need the mids and highs to come in a little more.  Low end is not bad...doesn't beat the hell out of the ear drums (the way I prefer).

Well...I think the cans should be burned in by now or at least something should be happening by now...but I cann't seem to get the mids and highs to come up well.  The entire sound spectrum seems to be compressed together.  Not sure what to do...anyone with suggestions?  With the drivers recessed 1/4" behind the mounting plate...can that make a difference?

Is the ground hooked up properly? 
 
Measure resistance at the plug:
1: Tip to sleeve
2: Ring to sleeve
3: Ring to tip
 
1&2 should be the same within a few percent (perhaps 10%) 
3 should be equal to 1+2 or put another way 1&2 should each be half of 3. 
 
Mounting the drivers slightly behind the baffle should not have a significant effect on the sound, provided the driver membrane does not touch the actual baffle. In the pictures you posted it looks like there is a few mm clearance so this should not be an issue.
