my final paper for my "core class" has to be a research paper that revolves around one of the numerous topics that we discussed in class. the first thing we studied was globalization, and hence, i have chosen to write a paper about how electronic music is an example of globalization. So, i was wondering if any of you electronica heads out there know some great sites or sources on electronic music. examples such as, its history, the sub-genres history's (i.e. breakbeat's history, ambients history, DnB's history, etc.), significant record labels, and so forth. thanx for any help that is posted!!!

Here are some music labels that I like:

http://www.warpmusic.com

http://www.audiodregs.com

You also may want to check out Tiger Sushi. I like the layout of the site, and it might have some info you'd find interesting. It is here:

BTW, that's an interesting topic. I know there are major electronica influences in Europe and Japan (the Japanese one's tending to be a little more avant garde)... and then there are a few notables in the US.

One of the books on my personal "to read" list may be a good resource for you:

Ocean of Sound: Aether Talk, Ambient Sound & Imaginary Worlds

by

David Toop

Chapters.ca review:
An extraordinary work of sonic history that travels from the rainforests of the Amazon to virtual Las Vegas, from erik Satie to the Velvet Underground, from the new digital technology to the sounds of war, in exploration of a new musical culture. Also includes extensive discography and bibliography

You may also want to check out the CNMAT webpage here at Berkeley. The acronym stand for Center for New Music and Audio Technology, and that's what the web page gives. There's a wealth of info, a lot of which probably won't be too useful for your paper, but you might find something. CNMAT has many collaborators worldwide (my professor just returned from a 2 week stint in France, and we have visiting musicians from all over). It tends to give concerts of the more avant garde variety, so I don't know if it fits into your definition of electronica.
