Found a nice youtube video on my feed. Watch until 2:50 to get the gist of it. Of course, to an expert, this is trivial. But it was neat to see the water analogy yet again.

regarding power-lines:
they carry very high voltages, deliberately to save power wastage .
they are immersed in a fluid (air!).
Air, mixed with pollutants and water vapour is actually a weak conductor.
the high voltages can ionize the air, causing small pollutants to attract each other , get heavy and fall to earth!
So the line can actually loose charge this way.
strangely , humidity has reverse effect! acts as an insulation.
