Eddie Current 2A3 Prototype Review

Nightfall's amp IS a one off at around $2500-3000 I think.


Good guess Rob, mine is coming in right in the middle of that range.

Just when you thought this thread was dead. I just received a pair of EH Gold Plate 2A3 tubes. I've been listening to the Sovtecks for the past 3 weeks or so. When I put the EH tubes in I immediately noticed a difference. It is probably premature to make any real judgment as the EH's have not burned in yet and I've only been listening to them for about 30 minutes. The music seemed to come a bit more alive. The Sovtek's were a little flatter sounding. Where I think I notice the biggest difference is in the highs and mids. The bass seems about the same.

To confuse me even more, I received a phone call from sacdlover, who is now officially my tube coach. He offered to put together a package of 6sn7 and 5ug7 rectifier tubes for me to experiment with. This isn't the first time Earl sent me tubes and I just want to say thanks for the help. It was above and beyond for him to call me in order to help me out, unsolicited. Thanks Earl.

Your welcome. By the way, your getting a tung sol clear glass 6sn7gt, RCA clear glass 6sn7gt and sylvania brown base 6sn7wgta for the gain tubes. The rectifier tubes will be a rayethon 5u4g, philco/sylvania brown base 5u4g and a tung sol 5u4gb. This is a nice cross section of tubes and will keep you busy for a few weeks. Keep us informed what makes the most differences.

I think I made a type before when I was recommending 5U4G types. I said "RCA 5U4GB" when I meant "TungSol 5U4GB."

If I had to have 5U4GB instead of 5U4G (some amps circuits require it), TungSol 5U4GB would be it. Very, very nice low-cost alternative to the usual hard-to-find 5U4G types.
