So a question to the tube aficionados here at Head-Fi...

...I now have a pair of Trafomatic Phono One phono stages, each using three 6N23P double triodes. They were shipped with triplets of Russian made tubes, and was wondering whether I can tube roll to something a bit different.

Browsing over at TDSL [DuncanAmps], the ECC88 is listed as 'close or identical'.

Would it be OK to tube roll to ECC88's?

And if so, any preferred brands? I see matched quads of Amperex/Mullard tubes going for ~$100 on eBay: *

Any additional sources I might look into [worldwide shipping required]?

It is. The 6N23P is the Russian name for the 6DJ8, which is a direct equivalent of the ECC88.

I really like my Amperex (Orange Globe), but American made NOS tubes are good as well (I have a Sylvania, but haven't tried it yet).

Can you point me to some sources for good ECC88's?

The current production ElectroHarmonix 6922s are good... really quiet. Available many places (Partsconnexion, etc.)

I can't remember off the top of my head whether the 6922 is an E88CC or an ECC88? But at any rate they are the same or equivalent (6DJ8-6922-7308). The Reflektor 6N23Ps are also supposed to be good. Take a look at UpscaleAudio's tube listings, although you will pay a premium price.

I'm no expert. Double check this information. But I think you can always replace a 6N23P with an EC88, but you can't always replace an EC88 with a 6N23P. My advice is unfortunately to buy an expensive NOS EC88, it would be my preference in sound over the Russian tubes from my meager experience.
