Ok, I ordered some Elna SilmicII caps to replace the generic caps, I am going to bypass the USB power with a 5V Elpac I have, and I received my opamp sockets so I can roll some opamps in it.
But there appears to be a big shortage of OPA627's everywhere. Digikey won't even allow backorders because the production is already allocated.
I'm disappointed because I figured this would be the biggest change I could make.
I wonder what the deal with these opamps is.

We've been through the Zapfilter thing already. Are the LM4562's a drop in replacement for OPA604AP's?

it's a direct replacement for the OPA2604s.

TVaudio,

Please don't take this as a sales pitch but if you still require some OPA627's please consider contacting me and although I'm not sure of your Silmic 11's requirements I do have some 47uf 50volts and 10uF 50volts, all pristine unused of course.

It's also worth mentioning my prices are ALWAYS at the lower side of reasonable including shipping

Hey...are the op-amps in the EB01 soldered or are they socketed? I'm thinking about buying one and want to roll the op-amps, but not if it requires a soldering iron!

EDIT: Never mind...I just read the OP again and realized you just received the sockets to allow op-amp rolling. Is installing sockets hard to do?

Thanks Gone4T, I may just take you up on the OPA627's. As for the Silmic's, I have already ordered them through DigiKey.

It shouldn't be too bad. There seems to be enough room around them to work easily.

Would you mind sharing pics of your finished work as well as your impressions of whether different op-amps improve SQ? I've never soldered anything before, but I'm willing to give it a shot!

No problem. As soon as I get all the parts I will do that.

Ok, I installed the sockets for the opamps last night and this morning I put my OPA627's in and............. nothing. I keep getting Windows errors that the DAC has exceeded power limits. So for now it is not working. So I am going to try hooking it up to my 5v Elpac to see if that will solve the problem of lack of power. Maybe 5v is not enough to run these opamps.

More info to come.

I checked the data sheet for you. The min operating voltage for opa627 is +-4.5V which is equivalent to a voltage swing of 9v, so 5v is not enough. 5v is at the lower limit of lm4562 and ad8066, so you might consider those. Take this with a grain of salt because I am not an expert as far as opamps. What did you take out?

OPA604's.

It looks like opa604 is also +-4.5v. However, the absolute min voltage for opa604 is +-1v compared to +-2v for opa627. You're best bet is to ask in the diy forum because they know the most about switching opamps.

SUCCESS!!! I hooked up an external 5v 1A power supply and everything works like a charm.

I like the difference this combo make.Bass is less muddy and tighter, the highs are extended and cleaner.
Now I have only been listening for about 20 mins, but so far it has been worth the effort.
