Just called AKG and found that the earpads for the 601 and 701 are priced $14.94 and $17.46 respectively.
Since they are priced differently, does anyone know what differences are there in these pads ? I know that the pads are interchangeable for the 501/601/701 in terms of size and the bayonet fit but are there any other differences ? Materials ? Shape/Size ? etc...

I'm 90% sure they're different colors, at the least.

well I went to the akg website to see the extra large pictures of the headphones they have over there to check out the color and texture of the pads and they seem to be the same. BUT...

Now check this out. This is the tech doc with the full blown view of both the headphones. See how the 701's pad is not perfectly flat like the 601's, looking from the side. They seem to have a slight countour/extension near the top.
They also have different part#s for the pads.

Can anyone who has actually seen both phones confirm this ? I am sure there are many of you who have tried both phones.

Here are links to the akg page if you are interested in checking out the super large images -

The K701s are definitely not "flat"... they are fatter around the back of the ear.

can someone pull the pads off their 601/701 and post pics? I want to try and mod my K240 with K701 or 601 pads.

thanks

One vote for them being the same pad. They simply charge more for the K701 pad to make people buying parts think that it is better. They have to justify their higher end headphone, just like GM underrated the horsepower of the Buick Grand National in the late 80's, because it actually made more than their 'sportscar' Corvette, which they couldn't have.

I think they are not completely the same. I`ve tried a 601 and a 701, seems that the earpad of 701 is a little bit harder then 601`s, which provide more suspension and less comfortable( I think, may vary for others ). And I must say that $15/18 is a nice price, for I could only buy a pair of K240`s earpad for $25 or more.......that really sucks........because a K240M only costs me $100......

I`ve tried that on 501, it does improve 501`s bass, and no more.........

foam pad only. But I really appreciate the K601/701`s earpad design, it`s far more comfortable than K501`s.

I tried the Kx01 pads on my K501 and it did improve comfort and bass.

back OT:
I stated "Kx01" above for a reason . . . . when I ordered the velours for my 501, I asked for K701 pads.

When I received them they were NOT 'slanted' like the pads on my K701 are . . . thicker in the part behind your ear than in the part in front of your ear, so as to aim the sound. The pad I received were in fact of even thickness all around.
Were they perhaps K601 pads instead of K701 pads?
Are the K601 pads also beveled or slanted?

Anyone else try the K601/K701 pads on the K501's, results?
I asked this question around the time the K601/701’s came out but no definitive answers.

I ordered the 701 pads and also the foam circles yesterday. Stay tuned.

From the blow-up diagram in the pdf file I linked above it looks like the 601 pads are not slant but the 701 are. Another major difference is the "foam circles" (part# 28) in the 601 and 701 both. I feel it is this foam circle that effectively seals the openings and also the gap between the baffle and the earpads and prevents the bass loss.

My K601 pads do not look slanted, though without a photo I am not sure what you mean anyway. Still I would say the K601 pad is symmetrical.

The 701 pad is thinner at the front of the ear and thicker behind your ear. This causes the drivers to be slanted towards your ear slightly rather than sit parallel to your face.

The velour pads I had received for my K501 was NOT slanted , but kept the drivers parallel to your face. I assumed that they were K601 pads.
